Does anyone know if a Cooper Excalibur in 30-06 or .270 can be "top loaded" with the magazine still in the rifle? Can you top off a round by just pressing it downward like you can a Remington, Winchester or other rifle with an integral magazine?

My HS precision magazine has to have the round slid in from the front precluding a "tactical top off"

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe that the Excalibur is only featured in their Model 52.
I have the model 52 in the Jackson Game configuration, 25-06 chambering.
To answer your question. Yes it can be top loaded, but not without difficulty, as that was not the way it was designed to be loaded. To do so, with the magazine in the rifle, one must first place a shell in position, then push the loaded round halfway into the chamber, then press down and sliding the round back into the magazine. If you try to place the round in position with the bolt all the way back, and press straight down it will not seat in the magazine. If you hold the single stack detachable magazine in your hand you have to do the same. Place the loaded round about 1/3 of the way toward the front, press down and slide to the back of the magazine. The magazine holds three rounds.

Gee...

That's how the HS Precision magazines work. It's not ideal for topping off or doing a "tactical reload" as they call it at Gunsite.

Had an FN PBR that was that way also. I can deal with it, as I didn't buy it for a tactical use.
Works pretty good as a deer rifle though........

For most hunting situations I don't see it as a problem, but I was going to get an Excalibur to replace a Kimber 84M I have. That rifle has an magazine that can be top loaded which is convenient.
