| In the category of "really big plains game rifles" one might be far ahead of the game looking at the .375 Ruger.....The .358 STA is a very powerful round and worthy of DG status but is not going to compete IMO with the new Rugewr offering.

| Forgive my ignorance, since I haven't been to Africa, but I have a hard imagining a better plains game rifle then the .338 Win Mag, with 225gr or 250gr bullets. |

| The .358 STA is a fabulous cartridge. It fits your objective for something new and different with long range potential perfectly. None of the cartridges you have listed are in the same realm as the .358 STA. You will need a long action for the .358 STA. The .358 Norma Magnum is similar and is based on a standard action. |

| tr 405,
My hunting partner is a huge .358 STA fan. I've shot his .358 STA and been with him on both elk and whitetail hunts. He also has used his .358 in Africa on plains game. The last thing he would consider would be getting rid of his prized .358 STA. It's performance on game is stunning. The .358 STA is flat shooting and hard hitting and for someone wanting something off the "beaten-path" you could not go wrong with the .358 STA. My pal has also worked up varmint rounds using .38 Special and .357 Magnum pistol bullets and takes his .358 with him along with his dedicated varmint rifles for dog towns. I keep telling myself I must have a .358 STA. The cartridge I use that is similar to the .358 STA is the .375 Weatherby. |

| Looks like you've got a fair 'gap' there between .22 and .30 cal. You could try something like the .25-06 or maybe the .260 which is 'new' and 'different' from you've you already got (or at least from what you listed). |
