No worrys Comrade. The struggle continues.(Stir) Enjoy that Yugo Mauser. Good buy. You may have to seat those projectiles a bit deeper and use a faster powder with lower volumne but inside 200metres, the wee beasties will never tell the difference.

umshiniwam, IMO - Your options are well thought-out and your all over/around the fix! Here's what it would boil down to for me: #1 - Rebarrel the 30/06 and use it for 3 more generations. #2 - New rifle in an 8x57 or a 9.3x62 Mauser. ________ Ray

Quit worrying about a heavier bullet than the 7x57 175 grain and build one of these. It will work just like the .30-06. A shot not taken is always a miss

My choice would be a 338 Win Mag.

first I'll admit to not reading all the replies, so if already asked I'm sorry although I'd go with a whelen, if you wanted to stay the same as 06 you could do a 30 x 35 whelen. neck the 35 whelen down to 30 cal use 35 whelen market brass. you have the cartridge you want, in a gun stamped as something else. Great idea! You might even be able to use 30-06 ammo in it.
