I just acquired a Husqvarna AB rifle on a Swedish 98 action (98 Mauser action) from the late 40's - early 50's era. On the barrel, the caliber designation simply says 9.3mm. Is this a 9.3X57 or a 9.3X62 or some other 9.3 cartridge ? Any help would be appreciated ..... thanks.

My understanding is that if the barrel only reads 9,3mm, then it left the factory as a 9.3x57. However, someone may have rechambered it to 9.3x62. Try slipping a .30-06 based case into the chamber. If it goes all the way in, it has been rechambered.

Frank,

I think you're going to like that rifle. Reason I'm responding is that I've recently been playing with my father-in-law's Husqie in 30-06. It's about the same age as your's. I wanted to share a few things he did with it recently to get it shooting better:

1: Cleaned out the barrel channel for complete free float, there was some uneven contact before.

2: Business card shim directly in front of the action. With the card the action need a little push to slide into the stock and this last tweak really helped shrink the groups.

Enjoy

Frank,

it should be a 9,3x57. Norma still loads the ammo, www.norma.cc Here in Sweden it is still considered a great caliber for a woods big game rifle. They are called "potato throwers" as the ballistics are considered a bit old fashioned. However it bags a moose or boar without considerable meat destruction, and quite efficiently.

Some info: http://hem.bredband.net/b102212/m46.html

Best regards,

Fritz

With the way things get modified, I think the only for sure way of telling what you have is a chamber cast. You may want to look at the bolt face to see if it has been opened to be a 9.3x64. It can amaze you to see what people can modify guns into.
