A friend of mine is looking to get rid of one of his rilfes, he has two almost new-in-box rifles and he offered me one for a very reasonable price. One rifle is a new Remington 710 in .270, the other is a Savage 111FCXP3 in 7mm Rem. Mag. Either would suffice for deer and black bear up here, and he'll let me take whichever I want for very little money. They are "package" rifles and include scope, rings, bases, and security locks, he bought one for his son but he just left to pursue his doctorate in SoCal. Since the caliber doesn't matter a whole lot (like I said, both are plenty for me) I wanted to get an opinion as to which is better built/engineered and use that as a basis for making a choice.
No Doubt about it IMHO. One is a rifle with a reputation for out of the box accuracy and years of solid performance. The other is an attempt to make a rifle as cheaply as possible to meet a price point. Buy the Savage.......DJ

No contest. Savage hands down. The Remington 710 is the last bolt action rifle I would consider. I read that it doesn't even have a screw on barrel, so I guess if you shoot the barrel out, you are just supposed to throw it out and buy a whole new rifle. (Which if you are smart would not be another Remington 710.) I have only owned Winchester Model 70's (4 of them) and Savages (4 of them also). My current rifle is a Model 70 Super Shadow, but if walmart hadn't had them for a steal of a price, I probably would have bought a Savage 11F in .270wsm. I still may buy one for my sons to use. Grab the Savage before your friend changes his mind and makes you take the Remington.

As much as I like the *M700*, in this case I'd have to say get the Savage. The M710 is nothing but a cheap "wannabe" rifle, geared toward the bottom-dollar shopper.
My father just picked up a Savage in 223 this past winter, and when I went up to see him last month, I shot it. All I can say is Wow!
I love my Remingtons, but you certainly can't argue with the reputation that the Savage rifles are building in regards to accuracy....
Well, it looks like a no-contest here! I was originally concerned with the quality of the Remington, the Savage felt more robust and much smoother in the action and the stock felt less "plasticy" and more composite-like, and looked better than a drab grey. The trigger on the Savage was not a gem, but felt a touch crisper than the Remington. I have a nice Leupold 2.5-8 sitting here which I think I'd prefer over the factory supplied 3-9 (which may be more useful on my as-of-yet unscoped .22) but the rings and bases are included and it is one hell of a deal. Plus, I alread own a .270, so it looks like I'm going to own my first 7mm Remington Magnum! Yeah! Should be death on deer and black bear (and maybe moose and elk eventually) at any range.
