Hi i saw a ruger m77 with very short barrel maybe only 16-17 inch barrel. what kind of velocity you can get frpm factory loded 180 gr cartridges in such a short barrel? regards yes Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.

shortening a 24" .308 barrel to 16" could be rather severe to velocity. The shorter we get the greater the velocity loss per inch we can expect. I'd venture to say that we could loose 350'/sec or more......essentually turning it into a .30-30. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." One example for comparison is: I get 2770 ft/sec with 168 grain bullets out of my 24 inch M70 bolt gun in .308 win. With the exact same ammo in my Springfield Armory 18 inch M1A scout rifle the ammo clocks out at 2675 ft/sec.

This may not be absolutly right but a quick calculation shows perhaps 190fps. lose in velocity. There is reasonable room for error in establishing a PV curve and getting an exact pressure drop as the bullet leaves the barrel verses how much VO is left in the glass. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! 180 gr SAKO factory loads are doing approx (Chrony F1) 2400 fps out of my 308 Ruger Frontier. Don't know how much of a loss there is v a 24" bbl, as I don't have a 308 with a 24" BBL. I'd guess that bartsche is pretty close to the money on this, as I couldn't see the factory SAKO ammo doing much past the MV listed on the box, which is 810 mps. The muzzle blast? That's another deal altogether... Cheers, Dave. Aut Inveniam Viam aut Faciam.

Talk about muzzle blast! I was shooting a friends HK full auto (class III) .308. It had an 11 inch barrel. It felt like some one was hitting me in the forehead with a boxing glove. Incredibly uncomfortable and fairly useless beyond 50 yards. Cool to carry and look at though. Will

I have a Ruger International in 308 and I want to say the barrel is 18" long. I found it very difficult to get decent velocities with it. I have another full length stocked 308 which has a 20" barrel, and it will move right along. I think very short rifles should have big holes in them if you want any real velocity. It would be interesting to see what the optimum bore is for an 18" barrel. I'd bet the 338-08 would be close to it. Kudude

The 7.62x41 (chopped down .308) has close to the same case volume as the 30-30. The barrel is only 16" long and it gets velocities comparable to the 30-30. The new Shaw barrel at 24" will arrive in a month or so and we'll see what increase in velocity the 8 extra inches give us. The 16" barrel was a bull barrel and the 24" barrel is a light weight sporter. Velocity increase was not the only reason for ordering this barrel. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! I'm getting 2694 f.p.s. out of my remington 7600 with 18.5 inch barrel and remington 150 gr. factory loads. Have'nt chronographed 180's yet. 308 winchester caliber.

Good point! I nearly bought the 358 Win Frontier for that very reason. Only the lack of factory ammo stopped me. Reloads would have been no problem, but it is nice to be able to walk into a shop in the middle of nowhere and buy a box of ammo when you need to... You can do that with a 308, at least in OZ. Low velocity, straight case, fast powder, cartridges loose less per inch.So cut down your 45-70 !! Actually I cut my 1885 Browning from 28" to 22" with no significant velocity loss.

I had a wonderfull little Ruger INternational Manlicher with an 18 inch barrel in .308 and I didn't have any trouble getting 2600 FPS with it and the 180 gr. Nosler....Thats good enough for anything on this side of the big water...... Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
