After selling my first rifle a few yrs ago also a 270 I bought another 270 to replace it.It was the last mod 70 crf they had in the store and cost about 675 USD.I just gave her an oiling and will name her BLACK BEAUTY.I think it is the black shadow model,I'll have to check and see.I was wondering if anyone here had one or any 270wsm and can share some knowledge. What did you find best about this calibre?I look forward to reloading and hunting with my new friend!

I was lucky enough last year to win a Model 70 Winchester chambered in 270 WSM. It is the stainless steel model with the camo stock. I really like the rifle and the cartridge.

I tried a number of combinations in this rifle and all shot pretty well. However I have settled on two loads for this gun.

One that I have not shot anything with yet is a load that I think will be great on coyotes. It is a Winchester case, a Fed 215M primer, 73 grains of H 4831, and a 90 grain Sierra HP. My buddies and I have tested this load in three Model 70 Winchesters and they all give half inch groups and nearly 3700 fps.

My big game load is as follows: Winchester case, Fed 215M primer, 66 grains of RL 22, and a Nosler 140 grain Partition. This load shoots nearly 3200 fps and consistantly will group under an inch in my rifle. I shot a wild hog, a black bear, and a mule deer with this load this past year and they all dropped in their tracks, never took another step.

I think you will enjoy the rifle and the cartridge, I sure do.

Thanks R Flowers,H 4831 and reloader 22 are two powders that have gotten good feedback with the 270wsm.

x-rings do you have any 130 or 140gr loads? Have you tried for long range accuracy? Given the shape of the cartridge, how does it feed?

I have one in a Mod. 70 Featherweight classic S.S. and love it. It was a gift from my father so it makes it extra special. I was not able to work up a load prior to this recent hunting season so I used the Winchester factory 150 Powerpoint loads. Four shots four dead animals.
The factory loads did have a sticky bolt lift. I am currently working up loads with 130 grain bullets and have tried both IMR 4831 and H 4831 sc as that is what I had on hand. Both powders seem to show promise. So far it looks like a very easy round to handload or I'm just lucky and my rifle is not to picky. My rifle did benefit from adjusting the trigger down to around 3-1/2 lbs. I think you will find you like the round and the rifle once you get her tuned up.
