Looking for a little advise. I have a Rem. 721 30.06 that has been sitting around for along time. I recently picked up a Mashburn Arms Co. 7mm super mag. barrel for a 721 action, and was thinking about putting together a mountain rifle around this. I know I can buy a new 7mm Rem. Mag.and have about same performance, but am looking for something a little different. I know it will need bolt face opened up, etc. You gents think its more trouble then it worth or make a winter project out of it?
Thanks

I would sell both items. The cartridge is classic however.

Find "Dober" Mark Dobrenski here or on 24hr and he will tell you all about the Mashburn Super. Bob Hagel and I think Warren Page shot that one.

David- it is my main go to round, but that is another story.

Bottom line is I am very busy goat hunting, drew a tag after 25 years of trying and am getting my buns truly kicked.

I'll get back to you in a couple of days, I have till Sunday afternoon to still get on the board with a "W".

and I am carrying one of my Mashburns all over the country with me

David-I'll give you my quick 2 cents here.

I got into shooting it being a Hagle and Page fan. Got to know Hagle fairly well and so went this way. Honestly for sentimental reasons more than anything else.

Ballistically it is a bit faster than a 7 RM and is pretty much the equivalent of the 7 Wby.
At least IMO it is.

You can run the 160's at 3150 to 3200 fairly comfortably. You can push them to 3300 if you want to lean on them hard. I personally do not want to go that hard anymore.

The 175's using R25 you can go 3000-3100.

I am talking about using 25" tubes here, I've also used 23" and that will slow things down a bit. Most likely on average about 60 fps total, for the 2" shorter tube.

You will need to order custom dies and this is one the main deterants (spl?). The set that I bought cost about $195 if I remember right. You will get a 2 forming dies and a fl sizer and a seater.

Making the brass is not all that tough, but it does take a bit of time.

If the cost of dies was not so bad it would be a lot easier to market this round. But if you take a 7 Wby or a 7 RM and long throat it you could get about the same speed (or very darn close).

Personally if the action had the length I would try to long throat a 7 RM and see what I had.

If you decide to get it let me know as I can help you out with a ton load of data. It is very hard to find data for this and the data that you can find is awfully aggressive IMO.

Let me know

Mark D

if the die cost doesn't stymie you then I say get after it, I kind of love the round. Vry user friendly and very effective!

Mark, hope you had a successful hunt. The price of the dies are not a deterant as much as me getting time to work on it. I was thinking of making a winter project out it giving me more time.
I recently picked up an orginal Mashburn Arms.Co. barrel in 7mm super mag. the barrel is only 22 1/2" long making me think of a light mountain style rifle.
I am fond of full mannlicher style stock and was thinking about going that route. Adding sights and a side mount Griffin & Howe with a older Leupold scope.
Would appreciate your opinion and loading info. You are correct, searches for information on this round is next to nothing, but again making it more intrigueing.
Thanks
David

I saw an article on the 7mm MSM, one of the interesting mentions, was, that with the neck length, it was easy to have your bullets from 140 to 175 seated to the same length. As for power it is around the Weatherby. For orginality it is unique. I agree with El Deguello, " Make a winter project out of it."
