The half century old O'Connor loads of 60 gr of H4831 for a 130 gr bullet are hard to beat. Present Hodgdon figures for the 150 gr bullet are less than O'Connor's 58.5...I go with their figure of 55.7 gr. I have seen others higher, but they _are_ the manufacturer, after all, and that should count for something! (see: http://www.hodgdon.com/data/rifle/270win.php)

There are other loads posted by other manufacturers and then there is the great resource of Steves Pages http://stevespages.com/277_1.html . Steves Pages are an incredible source, but he does have some top ends that go over many manuals. Read his disclaimer page first.

Check any and all figures against multiple manuals and work up, of course.

You'll be happy to learn there are no "bad" 270 loads, just some better than others.

Another old O'Connor load is 54/IMR 4350 with pretty much any 130 br; I prefer the Sierra SPBT.

Try working up a load with Rl-22 and 140gr Accubonds. I think you'll love the result..................DJ

H4831 and 130gr partitions have worked in every .270 I've owned and loaded for. 60 grains can be a bit stiff in some rifles. I start at 57gr and usually settle around 58 or 59. I don't see much of a velocity increase going to 60.

the 270 and 308 are probably the 2 EASIEST calibers I've ever played with.

You cannot go wrong with Re22, Re19, IMR4350, IMR4831, IMR4064, H4831-SC, H4350, AA3100.

IN GENERAL...I have found that just about any decent bullet from Hornady, Speer, Sierra, Nosler, Swift, Barnes (TSX), no matter the weight, will do real good with a near max charge for your rifle. Most of mine have accuracy with ~ 1.5 grains less than max.

I prefer Fed gold medal match primers, and WW, Fed, or Lapua brass (30.06 necked down). Yes, I gave in and tried the Lapua, but it's not as exciting as I'd hoped.

In my rifle 60 grains of new manufactured H4831 will blow primers. Old surplus 4831 was fine.

IMR 4350 is an excellent powder in the .270 Win. I use 55.5 grains of it with the 130-grain Nosler Partition bullet, and 53.5 grains with the 150 grain Nosler Partition......

Reloading for the .270 with 130 grain bullets is BORING!!! Just use the loads Jack O'Connor worked up in the 1950s and 1960s and never look back!

ddj,
I've always had good results with IMR-4350 and Sierra GameKings. Here's a 400 yards group - I called/pulled the one on the right:

Ddj: You did not mention what you are gonna be shooting with your 270 (paper or Deer or Antelope or Elk or what), but I have a wonderful accuracy and Deer and Antelope load recommendation for you!
About 4 1/2 years ago now I bought a Remington 700 Sendero (heavy barrel - 26" long) in 270 Winchester! What a wonderful and amazing Rifle it has been!
The first load I tried out of it gave me very good accuracy and just instant lethality on Deer, Coyotes and Antelope!
My load uses the wonderfully aerodynamic and very accurate Nosler 130 gr. Ballistic Tip bullets! I also use Federal brass and Federal 210M primers along with H4831 SC powder.
If you are going to Hunt this size game with this load make every effort to properly place these bullets through the heart/lung area and avoid the shoulder blades if at all possible!
These bullets give instant kills when placed properly through the heart/lungs of Deer and Antelope.
I have taken 6 Deer and 5 Antelope so far with this set-up. And thankfully all have been one shot kills! One of the Antelope was taken as it was standing just past the 400 yard mark (Leica Lasered)! One of the Mule Deer Bucks I harvested with this loading was just at 360 yards and again one shot dead in its tracks! My big Mulie Buck from last year was killed in its tracks at 120 yards with these bullets.
These Nosler Ballistic Tips really "explode" the innards of the medium size game and the shock just bowls them over.
For many decades I used to use the Nosler 130 gr. Partitions in my pre-64 Winchester Model 70 but I am now sold on these Ballistic Tips for Deer and Antelope!
Best of luck with your 270.
Hold into the wind
VarmintGuy
PS: Ray Sendero, great shooting there and no need to mention that "pulled" shot. Those are all killing shots even on out to 750 - 850 yards!
Again good for you.

I load 160gr partitions in my pre-64 but only because that's the only bullet it really likes. At three hundred yards it's only about an inch lower than my other .270 with 130 grain partitions. I shoot what the rifle likes for the most part.

That's understandible as they're little baby brothers of the tried and true 30-06.

For what its worth, I gave up reloading for Mr .270 when I found that Federal factory loads with the 150gr NPs shot as well as my best hunting loads.

I have 2 .270s.

rifle #1

130 gr Barnes TSX
RWS case
WLR primer
55.0 gr IMR 4350
averages 3074 fps measured 12' in front of the muzzle

rifle #2

130 gr Nosler Partition
Federal nickel case
WLR primer
54.5 gr IMR 4350 (for some reason, this rifle cuts the group size in half when I drop the charge .5 gr)
I would have to do some serious digging to see what it averaged for speed

When I was shooting a .270, 59gr H4831 behind the 140gr Hornady BTSP Interlock worked very well for me. Averaged 3076fps and .65" groups from my Hart barreled Rem 700. Numerous Whitetails and the one Elk I shot DRT.

Need to get another .270 some day. More DRT kills than with any other cartridge I have ever shot.
