Hello all. I am building a new rifle up. It is going to be a 300 Remington Ultra Magnum on a Model 700 receiver. I plan on using 200 - 220 grain SMK's, and or 200 grain Accubonds. Initially I will use a 30" Lilja Barrel. I have a few questions? Is there "that" much advantage to be gained in a 30" barrel, over a 28", or even a 26" barrel? I want to punch both paper and varment flesh out to about 1200 yards. Will accuracy suffer with the longer barel? Can I expect the same level of accuracy in the longer tube, that I have grown to expect in a shorter tube? It is a #7 contour Lilja. If I find that it is not worth it, I can always have it cut back until I am happy. Also is there any recommended "pet" long range loads for this 30", 300 RUM? If so, what kind of velocity can I estimate? Thanks in advance.

As long as you're building a "target" rifle for bench shooting the 30" barrel makes sense. It won't really give you much increased velocity but for a bench gun shooting 1200 yards you don't care.....at least I wouldn't. Accuracy should not be affected by the longer barrel. Check some of the varmint hunters forums and get their opinions..... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." A standard Lilja barrel will finish at 27". You can order the longer barrel from them at a premimum price. I don't think there would be much gained. Somewhere on the Lilja site Dan has a write up he did on longer barrels. I suggest reading it if you can find it. My guess is you might buy yourself an extra 75fps or less with that longer barrel.

If you want some first hand info try PM'ing .257 Wraith-- he has one with a 29" bbl. He is loading 220 ULD's.....I'll mention your post but he doesn't log on regularly.... IV minus 300 posts from my total (for all the times I should have just kept my mouth shut......)

I think a 30" is beyond the point of diminishing returns from an accuracy perspective regardless of any additional fps.

A 7 is a pretty stout contour but Mike I really think you have got a handle on this one.

There is an potential 200fps velocity gain when you go from a 26" to a 30" barrel. Some factors such as twist rate, groove configuration, final bore finish, etc. will make to final outcome. My 300 RUM has a 31" barrel with a 9" twist, It does well with 220gr. Rebated Boattail S-10 ogive bullets form NWCP. I get about 3100 fps, but I'm not pushing them at all, these bullets have a all copper jacket. The 300 RUM is at it's best with 29" barrel, however most folks will shy away fron the added weight and cumbersome tube sticking out of the stock. My 9" twist will effect my velocity; a 10" will be a little faster. Accuraccy should not be a problem, Lilja has a great reputation, just do all of the usual stuff, blue print the action a good crown, pillar bed, etc. Good luck, If yo have any questions, let me know.
