Thanks for all of the responses, lots to think about and please keep them coming. Good reasoning on both sides of the issue. Also wanted to thank everyone for not attacking anyone elses response, I know people have favorites and sometimes it can get heated. Thanks for refraining. If finances would allow, I'd build them both and take the one that shot better. Unfortunately, that's not possible right now. A couple of you did hit on my idea though. A metric caliber on the Mauser and a 'North American' caliber on the Pre-64. I'm in the process of collecting 2 of each for modifying; 9.3x62 and 7x57 and 338-06 and 257 Roberts to cover all my hunting needs. Also wanted to mention, the Pre-64 is not a collector rifle as it has extra holes on the receiver for a receiver site and a cracked stock that is also cut-out for the receiver site. Wouldn't change a collectors item.

I've seen friends fail to kill two moose in different years in Ontario with .300Win. Mags. I don't find moose particularly hard to kill, merely big. The blood trail indicated both were lung shots yet both made it into the bush and disappeared. I'm sure they ultimately died, but what a waste of a majestic animal. I steer clear of the big magnums for moose preferring a .30-06, .308 or even a 6.5x55 something that'll play merry olde hell with the boiler room and not exit into the sunset. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal

the best thing about the resurgence of the mid calibers is that instead of the 270 vs 280 vs 30-06 debates, we can now enjoy the 338-06 vs 35 Whelen vs 9.3x62 debate I like the 338-06 on the model 70 and 9.3 on the Mauser idea too. I don't know the conditions in Newfoundland, but the 338-06 would have a slight edge in range
