Is anyone having success with the Speer 270 grainin their 9.3x62? I am thinking about using that bullet for deer. If you would be willing to share load data that would be great.

Check out the Hodgdon web site. They have load data. I loaded 65 grains of H4350 to shoot a buffalo (american bison). It worked fine for the neck shot that the guide asked me to take. Bullet sailed right on through the vertabrae and no follow-up was required. The powder is really too slow for the cartridge and the load is compressed. I found that if I put in the maximum load, the bullet would move forward because of the pressure of the compressed powder. There were no pressure signs. I got away from Speer after I found some cheap Norma Plastic Point bullets at a gun show. I have a life-time supply (heh heh).

I've used 58.0 gr RL-15 with the 270 Speer on Graf cases with WRL primers. I really don't like this bullet for hunting. Have had them leave chucks of themself in the wound channels on pigs and deer when fired from the 9,3x62 and the3 9,3x74R. Nose shape seems to promote curved tracks after impact as well. Is great on paper though. Very accurate and consistent. I heartily recommend the 286 gr Nosler Partition for everything from hogs to Zebra and Kudu. I've found that Varget is a good all around powder with the 9.3x62. Try about 58.0 gr to start with the 270 Speer. I'm shooting a CZ550 and load them with Winch Large Rifle primers and OAL seems to be best at 3.33". Shrps74

Ray Atkinson always said that the 270 Speer was too soft. After trying it in my CZ 550, I came to agree with him. I think that bullet came to market when most 9.3's in the US were the x57 or x74 versions, and anyone with an x64 had to nut up and buy European bullets. The Speer is very accurate and makes a great practice bullet. With H4895, my 550 put it in the same group as the 286-gr. Partition. It was doing about 2,350, which is OK for practice, but on game I'd keep it to about 2,200 fps. The Partition is a much better game bullet. Okie John "The 30-06 works. Period." --Finn Aagaard

I have killed a few deer and wild pigs with the 270 Speer in my 9,3x74R double rifle. It has given perfect performance. The only recovered bullet was from a 300 lb pig. However my favorite bullets for the 9,3 are the 286 Nosler Partition, and the 286 Woodleigh Soft. If I had to pick one the Woodleigh would be it. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I don't think you will beat Varget in the 9.3x62 with any bullet, any weight. I'd start with the aforementioned load, 58grs of Varget, and you can work up from there in a new, modern '98 style action. My load for this bullet is around 2480fps, and quite accurate. Kudude PS: Once you think you have your load, take three cases and reload them until you've fired them each about five times, then section one of the cases. If it has no indications of failure, load the remaining cases two more times, and section the second case. I believe you will find no indications of case failure at velocities just below 2500fps. I'd like to hear about your findings.

Steve, I just reread your thread about cases and loads last night. Very good data esp in light of John Barsness' article in Handloader this month. Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Overdoing.

Please comment on the 9.3x62 Prvi Partizan Ammunition in 286 grain. Have purchased some but not had a chance to shoot.

Ezra, I am in complete agreement with NE 450 No 2 on his experience with the Speer bullet. It has worked just fine for me, too. I've shot mucho big (and small) game with the Speer 270's in my 9.3x62. While my favorite hunting bullet in this cartridge (for my purposes = European Big Game, Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Wild Boar, et al) is the 250 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip (discontinued, but I've got a few stashed away). The Speer 270 grainer is accurate and has delivered solid big game performance on the game I've shot with it; Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Roe Deer & Wild Boar. Personally think there is much "bullet bashing" concerning this Speer bullet simply because it isn't a so-called "premium". They are commonly available in Europe and reloaded by many of my Drive Hunt buddies. Apparently we get a different batch of stouter Speer bullets delivered here in Europe because I've never noted any 9.3 Speer 270 gr. bullet failures and I see at least 600-700 dead Wild Boar annually, many who expired in spite of the potential Speer catrastrophic bullet failure. Personally, on Deer sized game in North America I would recommend trying this bullet in a 9.3x62 instead of accepting at face value the "doomsday" predestined, so-called, poor performance. I've had good success in the 9.3x62 (also with the Speer bullet) with VV N140, IMR4320, IMR4895, H4895 and as previously mentioned by Walter in this thread; (while not the most ideal powder for this cartridge) IMR & H4350. Have fun! Cheers, Number 10
