What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

MIke-I used H4350and it worked well but I had trouble keeping the bullet seated as the bullet went down too far in the case. It did shoot well though.

What worked for me was R15 if I recall right. The bullet kept seated and it shot very well!

Well I had good luck with RL15. I was going to list my load then saw it was exactly 2 grs above the 53.5 that Nosler lists as max.

I'd try RL15 start low work up

Mike, just finished working up load with the TTSX 210 gr for upcoming trip to Zim. Would up at 51 Gr RL 15. Just can't imagine getting to 55.5 gr but if it works for some so be it. My 338-06 is a pre 64 fwt bored out and weighs just under 8 lb fully loaded. It is a delight to shoot as well. Carries a Leo 1.75X6E in Talleys. Oh, this load does 1/2" with three shot groups. Gotta luv the 338-06!

FYI my load with the 210 TSX went to 52 gr RL 15 with the same results noted above. Hope this helps.

Mine likes 51.5gr of RL15 or 59gr of H4350. You have to use a long drop tube or vibrte the H4350 to get it settled enough & then still compresses it pretty good. Oh, best acuracy from all my powders in this rifle have come w/ CCIBR primers. So at least in my rifle, primers do matter.

Mike,
I have extensive experience with Varget in my 338-06, it's a great powder in this case.
My load is with 210gr Partitions, so work up to it, it is 54gr Varget, Rem brass, Fed 210 primer, and COL 3.400". This max in my manual, but was safe in my rifle, no case head expansion.
Cheers.

I think the 210 is a wonderful bullet. I don't see myself going to Africa and at my age a trip to get a brown bear is a little bit of a stretch unless I win the lottery. I would not be afraid to shoot the biggest bear with my load and the 210. The folks at Barnes told me that there is only 3-5 inches of penetration difference between it and the 225 tsx. I would stay with the 210. I have great confidence in the accuracy of the load. I like it for deer elk black bear moose anything I am likely to hunt. DW

Howdy,

210 TSX - 56 gr IMR4064, CCI 200 primer, Weatherby brass=2750 with 24 inch PacNor barrel.

Tried IMR4350, RL15, IMR4320, H4895. IMR4064 gave best accuracy at highest velocity BUT the 210 partition shot a little better so I used that last year in Africa-worked great up to Eland.

Adios

Good Morning Mike,

I have had good luck with the 210 TTSX and 52grs of RL-15.

I took a cow elk with that load last winter. Bang and down she went.

Cheers

The two that have worked best for me is the 56 IMR4064 which is right at the velocity someone else stated above-2750 fps. My favorite in a couple of rifles is the 210 TSX with 62 gr Big Game. this one works great and hits right at 2800 fps in a 24 in. barrel.

Mike,
I have used 56gr of Varget with the 210gr TSX, velocity is right around 2800 I believe.

I have also used Rel 15 with 210gr NP's and 200gr Hornady SP's. They only run 2730 but they both shoot very in good in both of my 338-06's and print to the same POI in both rifles.

In my Rem 700, I can shoot three rounds of each load and get a 6 shot, 1.5" group.

In my converted Rem 7600 pump, it grows to about 2". With each 3 shot group printing about 1.5" by itself.

Big Game did the best in my rifle with that bullet but at a couple grains less than the listed load. It also worked very well with the Nosler 210.
My go to load for the lower 48 is with the NAB 200 gr. and IMR 4064 very accurate. Full penetration thru the lungs on a Bull Elk at 250 yds. Knocked him off his feet. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

I'm using 58.5gr of H414 to fireform new 338-06 brass and break-in barrel with 225gr Accubonds and TTSX's in my new Sako m75 Greywolf 338-06AI. Then from there we will see. Seeing RL 15 and 4064 getting the nod.
