Do you need an -06? No! But if you don't have one you could be mistaken for a communist!
Better hang on to that Springfield.

If you ever have a friend that wants to hunt with you and is without a rifle then the '06 is always a great loaner rifle.

I'm probably the only reader of this post who doesn't understand the reason for it other than to just make a post for some reason. The poster says he will never part with the 35 Whelen as it was a gift and he never enumerates any other rifles he has that he will get rid of to allow for new ones so what's the object of the post. Since he has to get rid of something to get something new and he will not part with the Whelen what's the object of the post. Unless he makes his living shooting he doesn't actually 'NEED' ANY rifles period. There is no law or mandate that requires one to do so.

Everyone needs a 30-06; I'm down to six. Everyone needs a 9.3X62, but I only have one.

It's easy to survive without an 30-06. I have done it for 40+ years and never felt the need to use one. Have owned several, but used as trading stock only. Big Grin

Exactly what I was thinking, that is if one is trying to be ultra practical.

I own exactly zero of the above, have owned each cartridge at one time or another.

I ponder selling my 338-06's every once in awhile to buy an 06. But the urge passes fairly quickly.

One of my favourite cartridges, one could get by quite nicely with just a 7mm-08 and a .338-06. Big Grin Big Grin

No you don't need the 06. A 25-06 or a 270 will be a good light rifle.
If you are traveling and somehow lose the ammo for your rifle. Can you walk into most any local store and find 35 whelen ammo? How about the 06 or the 375?

I started with the 35 Whelen out of spite against the plain Me boring diet vanilla 30-06. My main load was a Speer 180gr (35 Rem bullet) cranked up to 2900fps. Except for the crappy ballistic coefficient, the load was perfect for 100% of the hunting that I do. I killed a deer and the tree behind it with that load. I no longer have the Whelen, but I would live a perfectly happy life with just a Whelen and no 'put.

That said, I now have a 30-06 and will never ever ever part with it and see no point whatsoever in owning anything else except maybe to shoot different style actions.

When all else fails, split the difference and get yourself a .338 Win. a 210 nosler at 3000 FPS or a 300 gr. Woodleigh soft or solid at 2500 FPS pretty well covers the globe..I don't know of another caliber that can beat that..It only took me 60 years to figure it out. homer
