I'm going to put together a 9.3x62. I see that some barrels (Lothar Walther) list a slow 1-14 twist and the CZ 550 rifles have a much faster twist (I think it is 1-9?). I likely won't shoot anything heavier than 286 grain bullets, but might like to shoot heavier someday. What are your recommendations and preferences for twist? Thanks to all. Dave

Shilen lists a 1/12" twist as standard for all bullet weights. I trust their info on this matter, as I ordered one of their barrels for a 264Win I had put together and didn't heed the recommendation for twist vs bullet wt that is posted on the Shilen website and should have. Decide what bullet that you want to shoot & call that bullet maker & ask them what twist THEY recomend for that bullet. Doug Humbarger NRA Life member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club 72'73. Yankee Station Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

I would choose a quicker rate rather than slower since you may some day want to mess with heavier bullets (or cast bullets at slow velocities)....my CZ is one of my most accurate rifles. This isn't a benchrest gun and any degredation from a "too fast" rate is not likely to be a problem. But if the rate is too slow you will be sorry!

I rebuilt this old Vz-24 Mauser with a Shilen barrel and have never regreted it! ________ Ray

I reload both the 286 NPTs and 300 Swift "A"s with no problem with the 1-12 barrel twist. While doing the research for this project I used the greenhill formula to compare twists. Came to the conclusion that a 1-14 was to slow for these 1.37" and 1.32" bullets. PS: Notice that the 286 NPT is actually longer than the Swift "A"!!! ________ Ray

My CZ550FS has a 14" twist and shoots 286 Nosler Partitions into less than 1" with no problems.

Blaser make their 9.3x62s with a 1:360mm (approx 1:14") twist rate. I have shot mine with bullets from 250 - 286 grs with great results. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... Read somewhere ??? that the CZ twist rate in their literature may have been an error. measure any barrel first. 1 in 14" twist is the standard rate. Fine for 286 projectiles in my Lothar Walther barrel. (they are great quality barrels too).

I think my Sako is 1:12. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

I’m pretty sure that all factory Sako’s have 1:14” twist. My Sauer S202 has also 1:14 twist.

Ingvar, thanks for correcting me. I wasn't sure. Perhaps my Sako 375 H&H has the 1:12. I hate not having my gun safe close by so I can check these things. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member
