Hi Guys: I stopped at one of my usual haunts, a well known gunshop to see if anything new caught my interest. While scanning the mutiple gun racks I came accross a used Custom 7mm Mag, Chrome Molly barrel, Sako action, real nice custom stock, $699.00.... Hmmmmm it was wispering buy me, buy me, but alas I resisted. I need another rifle in 7MM like a hole in the head. I have a sako Finbear in this caliber all ready. I did purchase a new Ruger Commerative 22 convertable 22 mag. sight unseen for $309.00 coming in next week. But that 7MM was sure a beauty, I think that was one hell of a price, what do you guys think? Regards... Jim P

It's impossible to say whether the custom Sako is a bargain or not. Unfortunately, custom work is expensive and only worth its actual cost to the original buyer. As a subsequent owner, you don't know the make, chambering, or fitting of the barrel and unless the seller will allow you to take the gun apart, you don't know how the stock is fitted. You can measure the pull and drop to see if that fits you. Overall, customized guns are hard to sell for as much as an original factory version, even if the materials and workmanship are high quality. When considering buying a cusomized gun, you just have to assess its value to you as a shooter and discount whatever resale value it may have.

StoneCreek.... "When considering buying a cusomized gun, you just have to assess its value to you as a shooter and discount whatever resale value it may have.". It is very unfortunate for some buyers, but I think you hit the nail right on the head. It has got to be your call. It would appear this is even more true when trying to deal with the fellow who built the gun for his own use then decides he no longer needs, or wants the gun.....they know how much labor and material when into the gun, down to last dollar and last hour. It stands to reason when he say's his price is firm. His pride is at stake, and for most craftsmen, that comes pretty high. And for some, I might add, it's worth every dollar. Just my thoughts. Respectfully, Russ

Stonecreek & guys: I agree what you guys are saying, but the price of this rifle was $699.00 and I bet I probably could of got the shop down about $50.00 bucks. It had a modern Sako action, I couldn't tell who made the barrel, it looked like chrome molly to me. The stock was very nicely done with a cheek piece. All I'm saying is that, you are correct, no one knows how it was put together, but a regular Winchester or Remington in 7MM Mag is between 550 and 650.... for $699.00 the custom Sako could be a steal. Yeah well... Regards... Jim P.

PAHunter, I'm not familiar with all the ways you can buy guns down there, but based on the price differences you mentioned and knowing the spread between those brands mentioned up here in Canada, that sounds like a pretty good deal. It's hard to compare those rifles you mentioned based on price alone as you are looking at vastly different rifles. While it's not my own preference for rifles the Sako is about as good as it gets for mass produced rifles. For the price you are looking at it could be the best extra 50 bucks you ever spend.

Just to let you know, I saw a used Tikka deluxe in a 7mm mag in Maryland going for $750. Of course sporting goods run much more expensive around here due to lack of competition. So needless to say I think that is a great deal on that Sako.
