I am having a heck of a time deciding between a .308 Savage 10FP with an H-S Precision stock ($890) and a CZ Varmint laminate ($760). The CZ is prettier in the catalog. The H-S stock makes the Savage look good enough so you wouldn't be ashamed to take it home and show your friends. Any thoughts or recommendations?

I'd encourage you to go "handle" both of them before you decide. Occasionally a rifle just fits better than another one. It does seem to be popular for some folks to deride the "looks" of a rifle. I've found how accurate they are, how well they fit my build in Off-Hand, Sitting, Kneeling and Prone, and if they carry well in my hand, to be more important to me. I enjoy the looks of Pretty rifles and am amazed at how skilled some Gun Makers are. But, I've never seen Pretty make up for accuracy. It is especially nice when you can have both and don't mind it if a scratch or two happens along the way. Best of luck in your choice. The 308Win is an exceptionally well designed cartridge.

Both should be acurate. The CZ is built on a long action. Bothers me a little but not to much. I think I would have a look at some of the remington police sniper type 308s. Cost about the same and with all the do dads you could put on it, its at least a viable action...tj3006 freedom1st

Well I purchased a Savage Weather Warrior SS LH . So far it hasn't disappointed me that I made the decision . Like Hot Core said , Looks are a plus but no substitute for accuracy . I'm still working loads for mine so no bragging rights , how ever it has showed remarkable promise from the get go . I could care less what others think or how it may not be a Mauser ,Sauer or Browning . What it's capable of is more important to me than the bolt being smoother and tighter while being retracted in the action . It shoots real well most people would say GOOD TO GO . I on the other side strive for five in a single hole , which may never happen but it's exciting every time I try it . Because it's so CLOSE NOW !. For a hunter it's FAR BETTER than most of us would ever need !!. Shoot Straight Know Your Target . ...

First my only CZ a .222 , 527 American arrived with a lot of sharp edges and burrs, Feeding from the magazine was a problem a problem as was gauling on the extracter. As received it was a 2MOA grouper. After much honeing and stoneing and work on the magazine it functions smoothly. Once it digested a couple hundred rounds it became a MOA or better rifle. The 12bvss-s, Savage was a tack driver out of the box. The accutrigger proved to be a POS and still is after a factory repair job and setting! The trigger just completely freezes about every 20 shots or so. I have never changed the factory settings. Now other folks just swear by both rifles. Might be just luck of the draw. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

I've never owned either make, but I wouldn't think twice about choosing the Savage with Accu-trigger. I doubt whether there is a more accurate out-of-the-box factory rifle than Savage. I do own an H-S stock and it is rock solid. I guess the laminated CZ stocks don't crack behind the tang like their other wood stocks.

Well, I do own both and I can tell you from first hand experience that all three of my CZ rifles are far more accurate than my Savage rifles. Don't get me wrong, my Savage rifles are great and the "out of box" accuracy is excellent, but my CZ's win hands down in the accuracy dept.

Well Steve, I think that I will take your recommendation and order the CZ Varmint (.308)! Last week I was leaning toward the Savage 10FP with the HS-Precision stock. Maybe I'll get one on the CZ too although the gray laminate is cool. I think I'll order a Super Sniper 10x42 from S.W.F.A. right now. The Savage guys surely love the 10FP and after market stuff approaches the Rem 700.

Did the price difference play a part in your decision? Did you reject the American made Savage in favor of the lesser priced import?

The price difference did not enter into my decision between to buy the CZ. I buy American when possible and my vehicles are made in the USA. The finish of the CZ really appeals to me when looking at the rifles side by side.

If I'd have known you were judging these two rifles on their outward looks alone, I would have answered differently in my first post. I misjudged your intentions completely.

Well, The CZ Varmint .308 came into my Sportsman's Warehouse store today and I picked it up. It is a beautiful piece and I favor the gray/black laminate stock---gorgeous. The included target showed three one hole shots at 50 meters. $800 with tax out the door. CZ has milled scope mounts on the receiver and my question is what rings to buy? I would prefer Burris signature rings with inserts for 30mm SS 10x42 scope. Suggestions?

I love my Model 10 FP, and it shoots great too! "Let me start off with two words: Made in America"

onefunzr2: Well, I hardly made my selection of the CZ 550 Varmint laminate over the Savage based upon appearance alone. Now if you were to choose between two women given equal talents and enthusiasm, one being pretty and the other on the ugly side, which would you pick?

Obviously, pretty won out over Accutrigger and made in Westfield, Mass? "...the gray laminate is cool." Usually the pretty ones tend to be higher maintenance. Women or guns.
