After much deliberation between synthetic and wood, I finally found an answer. Picked her up for $600.00. Although I could have got a 7mWSM or 270 WSM for $540 in classic stainless, but by god, I wanted a 270 WIN. Just couldn't go for the WSM marketing trick.

Here she is:

I think the dark wood is a little unique compared to all the light wood featherweights I've seen. Might hide the character marks a little better!

I couldn't find a used featherweight in 270 WIN for the life of me and this was the best deal I could find for a new one.

So, what do you all think of my new princess? you can be honest!

Update I see people are still congratulating me on the gun. The dealer screwed me out of it on 02/08. The dealer, Dominion Outdoors Inc, of Stuarts Draft, VA, have a most unknowledgeable staff working in the gun department and incompetant as well. The employees pulled the wrong gun from the rack to place on hold, and ended up selling this beauty out from under me. They were going to ship the gun, until I asked for some more pictures. I realized the pictures they sent were not the same gun, not even the same caliber. I was then informed of the mistake. They did nothing on their end to rectify the situation, other than to say "were sorry"!

I was supposed to be contacted by the manager today, 02/08, but to no avail. I would avoid that dealer like the plaugue.

Nifty, I always liked those Featherweights. And the caliber is ideal for the gun - a marriage in heaven!

Yup! Me too. The .270 is one of my 2 most favorite chamberings. No way I'd ever go for a WSM, WSSM, RUM, RAUM & all the rest of that garbage. The older chamberings worked for my old grandpappy so they oughta be good enough for me. Enjoy.

FURocious,

You'll never regret this choice! thumb

I have one myself whose stock is one of the lighter (color) variants. I'm not 100% sure it's walnut (made in the late 80's); maybe birch?

At any rate, it shoots Fed TBBC 140 grainers very nicely (3/4"), but I've yet to better this with handloads. Go figure? Anyway, it keeps me loadin' and shootin!

The one thing you might check out is how much clearance there is between the barrel and stock. I took out a bunch of wood from the barrel channel this summer, and that seemed to help the accuracy.

Finally, to keep it light, I topped it off with a 2x7 Leopold.

Good luck!

Ray,

Yeah, I get so happy about a new gun. You all know the feeling I have right now. The real gun guys get happy for other who buy guns. That is a true test of a gun nut!

I'll be putting Burris Signature Select 1.75-5X33 w/safari post reticle on her.

I think I'll go with Burris bases. Although they are a little more blocky than the Leupold, they at least fit the action. I placed some leupold bases on a M70 featherweight LA in a gun store and they didn't fit the gun well at all. Too much overhang over the bolt. The Burris line right up.

I'm crushed,

Fucking gun store sold that gun while I was in the process of buying it! Supposedly, the gun had been taken off the shelf, tagged with my name, and awaiting my mailed FFL.

One of the incompetent personnel pulled the wrong gun off the shelf. And in the meantime, my rifle was sold!

Before I go slamming that store all over every gun and hunting forum I've ever come across, I'm gong to give them a chance to get me an identical gun. We will see!

Fur:

I can not agree with the other guys. Personally I think you choice of a rifle really sucks.

But not to be unfriendly, I will allow you to put it in a box and mail it to me and I will be more than happy to dispose of it for you, between now and say the next 20 yrs.

Because you are a forum "buddy" I will be more than happy to do this at NO CHARGE to you.

Personally I hate Featherweights, and to prove it I refuse to let more than 4 or 5 to exist in my gun cabinet at any one time.

cheers

Fur:

My above post was before I read your last post.

Did the gun store sell THAT model 70? That is why I prefer face to face business. I do not do business over the internet on a rifle purchase.

Guess you get what you pay for and lord knows the people working here don't make 50 grand a year.
probably pay the same as Burger King does.

I sure hope another Model 70 finds its way to your gun cabinet with a little compensation from the store for your frustration, instead of the usual shrug of the shoulders and the "sorry about that" speech.

Good luck

I think Boise Gun Company (208) 376-4440 has a new Winchester 270 Featherweight with a dark stock on the shelf. I saw one there last week.
good luck.

Oh yes, I got that "sorry" speech. I wanted to tell them that they were indeed "Sorry"...idiots. But I kept my cool.

For a week straight I talked to four store reps about that gun on numerous occasions setting up the deal. (2 managers and 2 subordinates) During all the talk and coordination, they were dealing with the wrong gun! It took me receiving some extra photos today to see the mistake. Thank god I got ancy and wanted some more eye candy!

There seems to be only two people at this place (which I think is comparable to Dicks or Gander Mountain) who could actually do anything more than answer a phone and be schooled about rifles from the customer.

I think after all of this, if they have any customer service at all, they should give me a 270 featherweight at cost. They won't be able to find an identical rifle within reasonable time, so giving me something close to it at cost, I think would be fair. It might make up for the "mistake".

And, I quote their slogan, "When your happy, were happy". I'm certainly not very happy right now!

Take you business elsewhere. Permanently.

There are lots of Model 70 Featherweights out there in .270, and many of them have nice wood. You can get another one through a different store; one that will value you as a customer and treat you with the respect you deserve.

Allen Day, JeffP:

Your both right, but it is easier said than done, especially when your not the one who spent all the energy and time trying to get a gun. However, your right, I've got to press on.

I figure if the store was any good, they would have offered to make things right. Instead of me asking for them to make things right.

Anyway, the store name was Dominion Outdoors Inc. out of Stuarts Draft, VA.

Nice gun indeed, and a darn nice caliber.
Amen on the .280 also, it's a fine gun too and one of my all time favorites.

Sorry to hear about your tragedy. The Winchester featherweight is really a beautiful rifle. Why not get it in something other than a pos .270.
