Picked up a Savage Single Shot action on one of the Web Sites' classifieds....

Picked up a stock for it also on the classifieds for $25.00 delivered... It needed a paint job so I did one with OD Green from the hardware store for $4.00...

Got flak on this, but Roger Bartsche has recommended good luck with ER Shaw barrels, so I ordered one chambered in 7/08, with a Factory Target Contour...26 inches in length...

Mounted a lowly Bushnell 3 x 9 scope on it, with a mildot reticle for use in the field under 300 yds... I also have a 6 x 24 scope for it for longer ranges...

This target is the results for the barrel at 100 yds, with a load of 30 grains of IMR 4198 and a 130 grain Sierra SP Bullet....

not bad for a non target bullet and lowly hunting bullet..

same load does similar results with 100, 115, 120, 130 and 139 grain bullets from Hornady, Sierra, and Speer ....30 grains of RL 7 produces a little better results, smaller groups...

MV with this load is 2500 fps... recoil is low enough, you can see your impacts within the scope site....

Blue Dot and SR 4759 also produce similar results with a little less MV...in all bullet weights tested...

here is the finished rifle... not pretty, but its functional, and that provides its own beauty to many of us...

got some other barrels on order via Shaw... this rig is going to be a switch barrel.. barrel is real easy to change!

I sell one of my other rifles I can get 3 barrels for this one, so its like trading one rifle for 3... heck of a deal isn't it?

Sometimes there's nothing wrong with function over fashion - I think it's a cool looking rifle. What do you hunt in your area? Blacktails/ Mule-deer? Or is it just for targets?

That's some kind of awesome accuracy!!! thumb
And the rifle sure looks fine to me, especially considering the cost of it.
I'd sure be proud of owning it.
Great shooting on your part.

But it's not a 700! How can it shoot that good?

SHHH, People might find out about Savage/Stevens rifles and make the price go up even more.

Congrats, Seafire.
Beauty continues to be in the eyes of the beholder. IMHO that target and that rifle are BEAUTIFUL! The Savage/Stevens actions and Shaw barrels are EXCELLENT choices for a build by those of us who continue to be "financially challenged". My latest in this configuration is a 220 Swift!
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

Seafire: Very nice results. I just can't understand the often-encountered bias against the Savage platform. Hope you're feeling better.

Great shooting Seafire. Did you do any trigger work before shooting?

Seafire....It looks like you built a dandy. No one can argue with those kind of results.

I have been using Shaw barrels for a few years and have never been able to understand the flak that they get. All the barrels I have gotten from them have been excellent shooters.

Fine project rifle you have there!! Big Grin

Thanks for the Kudos...

ZRR:

Yeah, one can't argue with results like this...

the scope is just a Mildot 3 x 9 Bushnell Trophy that I threw on it...

I've got 2 more Shaw barrels I ordered at the same time for Model 70 actions...

This one has a few more Shaw barrels on order, 220 Swift with a one in 9 twist is one of them...
plus a 6mm Rem...and 6.5 x 55...with a one in 8 twist...

I have a 25/06 factory Savage barrel also that I am thinking about turning it down a hair and rechamber to 257 Roberts instead...

I am one of those with bias against the Savage. It's nothing more than simple aesthetics. Period. The Savage is a proven game getter. For the same reasoning that some like anchovies on their pizza and others don't. I am one that doesn't.

However, I think Seafire did a great job!

Thanks Guys...

appreciate all of these kudos...

but the credit has to go to the ingenuity of those that designed the Savage Action...

the marketing dept at Savage...

the affordable cost of an ER Shaw barrel, despite the 16 to 18 week wait...

was over at the range today, and this rifle still continues to turn in little bitty tight groups.....

115 grain Speer HPs, 30 grains of Rl 7 with Fed 210 primers in a Lapua necked down 308 case...
or 120 grain Ballistic tips with the same load.... pretty darn impressive results...
