Hi folks,

My wife is in the market for a elk/kudu rifle to go with her .257 Roberts deer rifle. She has decided that she likes the .300 H&H and that I have to find one that fits her. As you might have guessed, this is a bit of a challenge. I'm now thinking it would be easier to have one built. Any suggestions on what to base it on?

Thanks,
Dean

From the dimensions it looks like a 300 RUM action should work, which has almost the same bolt face and then modify the stock to her LOP.

There are lots of good choices. What's right for you depends on several factors, such as whether you want controlled round feed, or perhaps that doesn't matter to you.

Stainless steel or not.

Also, it depends on how much money you want to spend on the rifle. It money is not an issue, then that means probably the Winchester or one of the commercial Mausers with the extended magazine, custom stock, etc.

The most economical way to end up with a rifle with a custom barrel, is to get a complete factory rifle, which already has the correct magazine length, and bolt face, and feed rails, and simply rebarrel it, utilizing the factory stock. However, there are several options for reasonably priced stocks, such as the Hogue.

The complete rifle that seems to offer the best posibility of a nice looking and functioning, and sort fo classic look is the CZ Medium magnum. Buy a 7 mag, and rebarrel it. Cut the stock to fit your wife.

If you want stainless, the Vanguard or Howa may be the least expensive, and yet the outcome will yield a very functional and reliable rifle. The magazine and bolt face does not require modification, and you could utilize the factory stock.

Howa with Hogue stock in any magnum caliber, rebarrel.

I used a M70 action that started life as a 7Mag. I cut the spacer out of the mag well and had it rebarreled. A lot of people will tell you that you have to open up the action. I didn't find it necessary. It's one of the slickest feeding rifles I own.

maki, I have a buddy in N.B. who built one in a Browning high power. It is gorgeous.
There are a couple guys inline for it but if you are interested let me know.

I would buy it but it seems I am afflicted with a BRNO 21H addiction right now. Medication is not helping.

This rifle was just built last summer and hasn't been hardly used. He has brass too which isn't too easy to find these days up here.

Among the actions that will accomodate the .300 H & H without modification are the Remington 700 (for any magnum chambering), Sako L61R, AIII, or AV (for any magnum caliber), and Browning A-bolt using a "magnum" length magazine. Any Mauser or Model 70 that was not originally for a "long" magnum cartridge will require modification.

For ease of building and economy, the Remington 700 is best; for quality and class, the Sako L61R would be my action of choice.

A fellow named Robert Stinski did it. I haven't been in touch with him in about 4 or 5 years though and don't have his contact info any longer.

One other thing I forgot to mention though is the ejector was also shortened about .10"

TC1, gorgeous rifle! thumb

Maki, try a 700 but make sure the 'smith gives the bolt handle a good going over. Other than that, GOOD choice on the cart! That is one slick feeding gem!!!
I was foolish enough to snub my nose at one in the past (my blown out and improved days Roll Eyes)
Now I respect that old workhorse for it's wonderful virtues. In fact my 300 WSM may be getting changed for a slicker feeder.

Thanks for the help guys, just what I was looking for. We'll start the serious shopping at the Easter show in Calgary.
