I have played with SMK and Hornady.
They are different.
I am not saying that they are bad, but they are different.

Quite a difference in price, but as the old timers in Long Range shooting used to say, if the bullet you are using does not start with an S, good luck! I have used the Hornady's over the years, but if getting down to crunch time at a Palma Match, Leech, Wimbledon, etc., always used the Sierra bullet Match Kings. (Bad Karma to use something else I suppose.)

The only way to know for sure is try a box. My hvy 308 prefered Sierra, then Speer then Hornady.

My 308 and 300WMs have a definite preference for the 168 grain SMK's (over Hornady). Having said that, if you buy 500, the price drop is significant. My 308 also likes the Nosler match 155's which you can sometimes find as seconds.

My standard Rem 700 LTR does very well with either the Hornady or Sierra 168's out to 600 or so.
If I want to stretch that to 800 then it seems to do better with the 155 Lapua Scenar.
I have just recently started to play with the Berger 175 VLD, too soon to tell, but looking good.

KS, I guess it depends on how far you need to shoot.

Cheers, Dave.

I purchased 1000 Hornady 168 308 match bullets in 2005. By 2007 they were all gone. Used wisely in punching holes in paper all the way to 600 yards.

I mostly shot them in a Douglas barreled M1a's and a bolt rifle.

I shot HM scores at 200, 300 and 600 yards. They shot well.

2007 I purchased another 1000. The price was good and the bullets are good.

I have shot tens of thousands of SMK's, thousands of Nosler 168's, and now 1 K of Hornady's. Really, they all shoot good. Sierra's are the gold standard in my opinion, I can pick up any box of SMK, any vintage, and they shoot well and to the same POI.

Incidentally I shot Hornady 68's in .223 last week, out to 300 yards. I shot 198's and 196's at 200 and 300. Probably would have done better if the weather was not 93 F in the shade. But anyway Hornady's .223 match bullets shoot just fine.

Buy by price.

My match M1 and M1-A likes Sierra 168's much better than Hornady's. I recently purchased a Savage 110 that flat out loves the hornady 168's.
