Traded my Model 70 coyote 270wsm to a new plain ole discontinued 700 ADL 7RM and got a little bit of money as local gun shop had a new one that had been on the shelf for a while.
I have nothing aganinst the coyote but I never liked the way it felt as I thought it was too clumsy feeling.
98% of its work will be paper, a few deer and maybe an occasional coyote. Anyone know any good loads for this use?

Tonight a friend of mine lightened the trigger to 2 1/2 lbs and floated the barrel. He had 2 boxes of 175gr core-lokt that he just wants the brass from. So will just zero and hunt with those so I dont have to mess with working up a load this year as the season opens in 4 days. Will probably go to a 140 or 150 for next year though. Never had a 7RM so will like to see how I like it.

If you use Nosler Bullets, try their most accurate powder tested load first. I've had really good luck thus far!

With my 7mm Rem Mag it likes those nosler partition 160 gr bullets with H1000 powder. I have a 26" barrel also on it. Of course it will also put 5 150 gr bullets into one hole at 200 yds using H4831 powder.

Jarrod,

I have a 700 7RM ADL that just loves R22 under 150 NBTs, 150 Solid Bases, 160 Sierra BTSPs, and 160 ABs. 66 grains works well w/ all of those bullets in that particular rifle. All of those combos will put 3 shots from .4-.6 w/ the norm around .5, hopefully you got an accurate tube on yours as well. I'd suggest starting around 64 grns of R22 and working up. Fed 215s have given the most cosistency w/ R22 for me.

That rifle also does well w/ 140 ABs and NBTs over 69 grns of H4831 which is close to max in this rifle. You should start around 67grns w/ H4831 under 140s.

Good Luck w/ your new toy.

Good rifle, great cartridge.
In My opinion its a bad isea to free float the barrel untill you shoot the rifle.
While its true most rifles shoot better floated , many like a little tip preasure,
I have a 7mmStw that shoots great with tip preasure, just my opinion...tj3006

67 gr. RL 22 w/ 140 Accubonds, CCI250 primer, Hornady Brass crosses my chrono at 3300 FPS. The barrel is 25" though. This load is scary accurate in my rifle. Start loading at 5% less and work up for your rifle as it's near Max in Nosler Book

For some fun try H414 and 100gr Hornady hp's. Don't have a chrony, but I'd imagine that they're quite quick. I use RL-22, 160 AB's and CCI200 primers for all my big game loads from antelope to elk.

All the posts about RL powders and I've never found a load that shot well using them in any rifle--go figure Confused Lots of good load workups with Hodgdons and IMR though, but when switching to RL equivalents, no luck. Just don't understand it.

According to the way it was shooting today I think you are right.
The first ten shots I cleaned the barrel every shot while zeroing in at the same time.
Then I shot a 3 shot group with the Factory 175gr Core Lokt that my friend gave me. 2 of them was just like one big hole and the 3rd one touching. I thought that was pretty good for an ole cheap ADL and 7 year old factory 175's and being the first 3 shot group from it. Smiler
I think I might could learn to like this rifle and the 7RM.

Montana Mike,

My first rifle was an old ADL SS barrel when Rem first came out with them, bought it in college years ago used for $200, glassed/floated/trigger adjusted. Shot great, chrono'd 115's at 3375 for an impromptu varmint load.

They SMOKED!!!

I have never been a big fan of the 7Rem Mag, not based on the calibers lack of merits, I just had other stuff all around it, that do the same job...

but I did end up with a Savage 116 Action with a 7 Rem Mag barrel on it... I got it new and at a inventory reduction price.. purchased it for the action and switch barrel capability...

HOwever, playing with that 7 Mag some, one sure can get some accurate loads out of it...

Personally, I'd of kept the Winchester, but I am a Winchester guy over a Remington usually...

But this darn Savage 116 would be a good recommendation in any caliber.. and the 7 Rem Mag will do about anything you ask of it...and accuracy on the Savage have been excellent...

The 7RM is a great caliber, but I think too many guys try to reinvent the .270 by loading 140gr bullets. A good 160gr bullet @ 3000fps is where the 7RM shines IMO. You can load Speer or Hornady for deer & NP or Swift, etc. for elk. RL22 & IMR7828 have been good to me. thumb
