I am looking at a .264win mag on a 1917 rem action with a 26" bull barrel. it was customized somewhere here in Maine but i don't know the Gunsmith. the price is $425.00 I want to know if this is a good deal. and I have always liked the .264 but never shot it. I want to know if it will live up to my expectations. i have a .270win in the post64 mod 70. which has been my long range gun since I started hunting. I don't know if the .264 will be repetivie since i have the 270. do you think that on paper the .264 will be more accurate than the 24" regular barrled .270? Im just after the opinions. thanks

you didn't say what kind of shape the rifle is in, but at 425 if it is in at least VG it would be a fair buy. Done up in a good stock of fancy walnut and in exc shap it would rate as a very very good buy. The 264 is an excellent long range round, however I doubt that you will find it any better in actual use than your 270. Like a lot of things, it sounds better on paper than you can notice in use.

stock is nothing truly fancy but but the rifle itself is beautiful the jewling is great and the barrel is a high luster blue. the stock is plain. but I have wanted to build my own stock for a long time. so i may try my hand at it with this one if i choose to buy it.

The .264 is not a heavy recoiling cartridge. The 1917 action is a heavy action and is best used with seriously heavy recoiling cartridges...like the .375 H&H or the 416 Rem Mag etc.....even the .458 Lott.

Frankly it's just not a rifle I'd want at all..... IMO it's worth $125 and then only to someone that wants to turn it into a big boomer. I'd let someone else have it.....Look for a M-70 in .264 and you'll have a far superior rifle.

This said, Butchloc said it well....it's really not much better than a .270.

No...I do not.

thank you for you responses. I will continue my search. I did see that Fox ridge has an encore barrel for the .264. what would your opinion(s) be for the encore? I just want a long range rifle that can take deer and partisipate in some informal long range shooting with friends. please suggest a rifle/cartridge. I am not new to hunting. but I am getting interested in making it more interesting by getting farther away.

I love the 264. But if you're not a handloader, it won't be any better than your 270. There are only 2 current factory loads and they aren't anything to write home about. But if you handload, you can make the 264 do what it was designed to do...exceed the 270.

Opinions are like buttholes. I have found that rifles like this are worth what you think they are worth. If you have the cash and want to give it a try go for it! It may be THE rifle for you.

a 1917/p14 action that has properly had all the excess metal cut away is no heavier than a 98. it's longer but not heavier and rcvr ring is actually a little smaller in dia. jim carmichael built a 243 once on a 1917 enfield action. is an xlnt choice for belted mags because the mag box in standard form is longer than a 98 and will handle any saami spec OAL ctg. if the rifle looks like it was done well and you want a 264 mag that'd be a good one. you have to look at it from the standpoint of "what other 264 mag could i get for this money and would i like it more".

Well I looked at it again last night. I have decided aginst it for now. but what i did see is that Thompson/Center Has just come out with the Encore Pro Hunter which is a new stock system, swing hammer to eliminate extensions, and stainless fluted 28" barrels in most calibers. Take a look at the site and recomend a caliber in the 28" barrel. I am leaning toward the 300 win mag. I guess because that is what Carlos Hathcock II used for a cartridge to win at camp perry. but i dont know......recomendations Please
