I have a 35 whelen AI that was a gift from my stepfather, great gun, 26" Douglas Barrel. He had a load developed for it that put a 225g Sierra GK out at 2800fps, chronographed. But unfortunately that was years ago and he not only can't remember off the top of his head the load, but it isn't written down anywhere. The best I could do was find a load during his development process that said 54g of IMR 4064. Now, he says that is the powder he used for the 2800fps load. I loaded some up at 54g and tested them today, accuracy was fine (always hard to tell with my shooting, and my improvised rests) but velocity was only 2662. (3 rounds, 2 were 2662, one was 2669).

Is that enough velocity do ya'll think? Anybody got load data out there for the whelen AI? My books are old and only one even has the standard Whelen in it.

I use 62.0 gr of AA2520 for 2800fps in my Whelen AI. Work up to this load and look for pressure signs. Also, A book titled Big Bores by wolf publishing has lost of information on the Whelen and the Whelen AI. The Sierra Q&A phone or Web page is where I obtained my frist reloading info on the Whelen AI, Give them a try, I thought thay were very helpful.
