I just purchased a Remington Model 700 Stainless Special 5-R mill spec barrel in 308 win. I am told this rifle is produced for the military as a sniper rifle and is suppose to be very accurate...I guess we will see about that.

Do any of you have experience with this rifle?

What make and model of scope would you put on this rifle? I plan on using it strictly as a mid-range target rifle 100 to 700 yards, so that I can improve my shooting. I appreciate any suggestions you may have. The price range for budget purposes $600 to $1,000 for the scope....Thanks JJS

You got some pretty good advice from the guys at the campfire. The "mil-spec 5-R" gets thrown around a bit. If I am not mistaken the barrel is the same as the sniper rifles but the action used on those rifles is the 40-x. But properly bedded and hoping concentricity between bolt receiver and barrel is as it should be, that thing oughta shoot. As for a scope, everyone has their favorites. Some will prefer brand a and some will prefer brand x. Your eyes are the ones looking through the scope. Not mine and not everyone elses. For the most part, you get what you pay for. Sometimes you pay for more than you get. Lupie, Nikon, Nightforce, Zeiss, Swaro, S&B all make excellent scopes. You just have to look at each and find the one you like best that falls into your budget. I like the Nikons and the Leupolds. I have had good luck with the Nikons for the last several years. Am awaiting arrival of my first lupie. The scope suits MY eyes and meets my needs. You just have to look and find one that does what you want.

I would put a Leupold or Burris with mil dots. Sited in with 168 gr match bullets at around 2600fps dead on at 300 yards you will beable to pick the Mil dot you want and make hits from 100 to 700 yards with no trouble.

I use the first mil dot above the cross hair for 100 and 200 yard zero the first below for 400 yard zero ect out to 700 yards. You might have to use the top or the bottom of the correct mil dot at each range to get center hits put once you have it figured out. It is sweet.

Like Pdog shooter said, 3x-10x or 3x-12x Euro Diamond with BallPlex would be a great addition to that rifle, or a 3.5x-10x or 4.5x-14x Leupold should also do a excellent job, Midway just recieved some Euro Diamonds in, as well as The Optic Zone, I've looked through one of the new VXIIIs and compared with a Burris 3x-9x Signature and between the two it was hard to tell the difference, though it was midday, so I can't say how they both looked at dusk, the Burris did look better than a Zeiss Conquest when comparing in lower light though, the fellow helping me at Gander thought the Burris looked better than the new VXIII, so much for the Index matched lens system, though they're still a decent scope. I bought one of these Remington's awhile back. After breaking in the barrel(I know, but old habits die hard) it shot 3 rounds of IMI-81 military ball into one .308 hole and the next two opened it to .55. I thought it was off the paper at first.
I would call it acceptable.

280,

Thanks for your assistance. I posted on 24 some results, similar experience in shooting this rifle as the D's posting below. This rifle is a real shooter...I am looking forward to trying my handloads. I was so pleased with the rifle I purchased another one just like it...for the money I think it is hard to beat as I will be using it as a platform for improving my shooting techniques, etc.

Please see my last posting on 24 in regards to Var X III vs Mark 4 or VX III. Again I appreciate you help...Thanks JJS

JJS.

Take a look at a Busnell 4200 Elite in 6X24 with the Mil-Dot Reticle. I had a chance to use one on a 22-250 while shooting P dogs in Colorado, last year. I was so impressed, I just bought one for a 6mm-06 I am building. I don't think I have ever looked through a clearer scope or one that was any easier to adjust, Including my Vari-X III'S.

I agree with Jerry -- I got the exact scope he mentions, and it really is great. I was so impressed I also bought a 6-32x version of the same scope which is also excellent (although it the longest damned modern scope I've ever had!)
