I just got done reading some old post about the accuracy of the Win M70 Featherweight. Quite a few Bad reports out there.


I just purchased a M70 in 6.5X55 in stainless/wood. Was this a mistake? Are the M70's notorius for poor accuracy? I handload and pumping brass down the barrel until I find a great load is not a problem. Question, will I be able to find such a load? Or should I leave it at the gun dealer and get a CZ?

Steve, My '06 shoots under moa out to 300yds. Try some good bullets first(match)and if they don't shoot right off the bat, I'd be surprised. Jay

My 6.5x55 M70 new about 2000 is a very accurate and consistant.

Get some R22 and some norma or lapua brass and have at it. mine shoots noslers , hornadys, speers and sierras all well.

My 6.5x55 Featherweight shoots really well. It likes Ramshot Magnum and RL -22 with just about any 140 grain bullet.

My son's 6.5X55 featherweight M70 shoots consistant .7-.8" groups with RL 22 and several different brands of bullets.

A picture's worth a thousand words. Here's an "out of the box" Model 70 in 375 H&H with handloads. Anybody that tells you 70s don't shoot is an full of crap as a Christmas goose. jorge

Well, you'll know if you made a mistake or not after some load development. I've heard and experienced a lot of mixed accuracy results with modern model 70s - I've actually had better luck with the pre-64s, despite their somewhat rougher bores. Hopefully your's will be a shooter..

The barrel on my M70 Featherweight Classic 6.5x55 came free-floated from the factory. It was okay accuracy until I torqued the action screws down to 60 inch-pounds. It's now an inch for three shots, +/-, using Hornady 129g Interlocks ahead of 45.5g H4350.

With a model 70 of any breed the middle stock screw is important. Most seem to like it just tight enough you don't have to worry abou it falling out, but of corse some are different...tj3006

I have a .30-06 M70 ranger. It's the no frills version of the 70 but has the featherweight barrel. I took a shooting course taught by ex navy seals. I put my cheap light rifle in a cheaper Ramline plastic stock. It shot 1 MOA for three days. Barrel cold, barrel hot, same POI. All the instructors ended up wanting to try my "practical" rifle. I think the guys with a few grand tied up in their custom tactical M700's were jealous.

Never satisfied, I bedded it into a fancy walnut featherweight stock. I guess I love wood. Still shoots very well. My sons will be using it with 1" cut off the original wood stock in Tanzania in August.

My M70 Featherweight is a 7x57, it can be very sensitive to ammo, but with PMC 175grs it does sub moa for 3 shot groups

I have several mod 70s and they all shot very good from the factory!!!!!!!!! Except the 6.5x55 but I sent it back to big W and it shoots very good now with 125gr partitions and h4350. my 270 and 300 wsm and 243 wssm fwt shoots very well .5-.7 for each gun is the norm with the right loads, I might add that im shooting TSX in all fo them!!!!!!!.
