I have always had good luck w/ the HDYs in my 7mm Rem Mag but, I loaded some Seirras last night and I was just wondering if any of you had been shooting them? I have had good results w/ the 162 grn HDY BTSPs so, I believe I should do alright w/ these. W/ the hdys @ about 3100fps, I can get 4 @ .8" (100 yards). Not the best groups but, good hunting groups. I acheive better accuracy w/ the NBTs but, I am thinking about going after a Rocky Mtn Elk this fall. Any info would be much Appreciated. Reloader

You may not want to here my advice but I would stick with the Hornady's. At a little less than 1 MOA groups, that would be plenty good enough to have to blame yourself for a muffed shot at reasonable ranges. Sierra bullets have a good chance of grouping as good or better but would not be my bullet of choice, as a handloader, on elk.

If it came down to a choice between the Hornady or Sierra bullet for use in a 7mm Magnum, I would just shoot which ever one gave me the best groups. The bullet performance will not be enough difference to tell. I have had good performance from the Sierra 160 BT, but have to admit to having only shot deer and antelope with it. Performance was excellant, complete penetration and quickly dead animals. My only reservation for the use of either of those bullets for elk would be their questionable ability to stay together on close shots. Either one might over expand at close ranges on something as tough as a bull elk. For elk a better choice would be a premium bullet like the Nosler Partiton. I shoot the 160 Partition in my 7mm Wby Mag and have had good luck on game with it. Accuracy in my rifle is just about what you are getting, around 3/4 of an inch at 100 yards. Try the Nosler Partitions, they just might give a little better performance on really big game. R F

Thanks for the info. I am going to try them out tommorrow and see how they group. I believe they should be adequate for Elk, I have seen them taken w/ alot lighter bullets. Thanks, Reloader

DON'T USE SIERRAS! I did for years in my 7RM. VERY accurate, and they worked fine for deer on the small side, but on anything more than 300# jacket separation is TERRIBLE when closer than 100 yds! I it occured to me on several large mule deer in CO. One took 3 rounds to finish (through the shoulder that you could cover w/ your hand). (I know that 300# sounds big for a deer, but they were - one was weighed dressed 265 w/ 31 1/2" spread; the other was bigger, but not weighed, 34 1/2" spread). Buy Nosler Accubond! Balistic tip accuracy and almost Partition terminal performance!

The Sierra 160 BTSP GK has become my standard 7x64 bullet. It's as accurate as MK and performs very well on light game. For heavier game or at magnum velocities, I would suggest the 160 GK HP, equally as accurate but much tougher than its SP counterpart.

i have used the 160bt to kull maybe a dozen hogs & 1 deer.. they did fine on big hogs but they have much weeker bones than elk, my hunting partned has killed more than a dozen elk with a 7 rem mag & 160 speer hot cores,

Give the Nosler part. a try or even the new Nosler 160grAB. I would rather have a bullet shoot 1 1/2" groups & know it will give me the terminal oerf. I want on really big game rather than a sub MOA that I will worry about what's going to happens when it hits game (JM2c).
