Favorite .300 Magnum?

300 Win. Mag would be my choice. It is a standard tactical/sniper round and used by many.
It has a large number of very accurate factory rifles built for it and reloading dies. I really like the Lee Deluxe set of reloading dies.

300 H&H romantic or nostalgic? Buy a painting or a cup of coffee if you need to feel warm and fuzzy.

As far a extreme accuracy is concerned the 300 Win. Mag. isn't the optimum design. Technically the 308 Norma has better dimensions for efficiency and probably should have been the standard 300 magnum.

I found a 300H&H P64 M70. Had fun playing with it reloadig wise- I found that ALL published data of late is way below what the 300 H&H can do with safety.

I think I'll stick with H4350 , and 200 partitions. MOA from a rest, velocity almost at 2900, w/o pushing hard.

Fun and no more felt recoil that a 30/06 bolt gun (decel pad may help??).

May try a few other bullets though. 155 Nol CCs smoked at well over 3150 with the same load, but not as accurate, nor intended for game (P-dogs maybe?).

My Dad made up 308 Norma Mags for my two brothers on M98 actions and 26" Douglas bbls about 25 years ago, smokers to say the least! I wanted mine in 06, which is an heirloom to me since my Dad passed.

When you get down to it if the guy behind the trigger knows his round and rifle and knows his personal limitations then I am not convinced one 30 cal mag is any better than any other. The result is going to be the same. No amount of brass and power will make up for weak skill or a lack of discipline. Call it nostalgia or warm and fuzzy but dead is dead and it's usually the Indian not the arrow that get's the job done.

Robert, with your .300? You know, my .300 Wby will be headed to Africa for plains game in the next couple GBW, and I have it already range ready. However, just to make sure I am taking it out to hunt some chucks this summer. Seems that guns I have that prove themselves on chucks end up being lucky guns on big game. Superstitious? Nah... Maybe. Just gotta do it. I think that Barnes 180gr TTSX may be able to stop a chuck. We'll see if it's up to the task, lol.

Naw, that guy wouldn't know a 300HH even existed. He'd be the guy with a safe full of plastic-stocked short-mags tricked out with 50mm Swarovski scopes.

None. I just never felt the need to push a 180 grn 308 bullet over 2750 fps. That load combination is plenty flat out to 350 yards which is far as I am going to shoot under field conditions.

If I felt the need for more "umph", the best answer never seemed to be add another 150 fps. It always seemed like a get a bigger gun was a better answer.

I had a 300 Hawk which will duplicate a 300WM but sold it. I also had a WSM but it was stolen.

I guess if any it would be the WSM just cause they are cute.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
