Looking for a .308/.762 rifle for target shooting. As I intend to shoot lots of rounds per session I believe a heavy barrelled rifle would be the best bet.

Now for the dilemour. I love the look of the Styer, but at $1800 it is a pricey bit of kit. At $1395 the Remington has a barrel I could change, I could get an Accuracy International Stock for it at a later date, and In tests here in the UK the Remington shot tighter groups than the Styer.

I know in the US you have lots of Custom gunsmiths that could get me something even better for that kind of outlay, but here a custom rifle would start around $3000.

All help/opinions/experiences welcome. Thanks in advance guys.

all of the LTR and PSS rifles i have shot did not need anything other than a trigger job and bedding. they all shot better than most can shoot consistently. buy the remington.
a note. the pss stock is for larger hands. the palm swell makes it so. the ltr fits most humans
enjoy............

Kongy,

I've never used a Steyr, but my PSS is accurate, even with off-the-shelf ammo. With handloads it's very accurate. So is my friend's PSS. Here they are quite a bit less expensive, but I've been really impressed with the one's I've seen and shot.

kongy,

Welcome to the forum.

Every SSG I have seen was difficult to extract once it gets hot.

I am not sure that will happen in England, but it was happening here on a daily bases each time we shot them.

Just thought you might bear this in mind.

Most guys I know who do the type of shooting you are referencing use the Remington 700 Police. I was looking to do the same thing you are mentioning and a very good shooter told me about Remington's 700 SS 5-R rifling Sniper rifle. I purchased one (cost $50 more than police model and comes with a 24" barrel). Broke in the barrel first.... loaded up Sierra Match Kings 168gr, Varget, Lapua Brass, 215 Fed. Match primer. First five shot group was .192" second five shoot group was .250", I was so pleased with this rifle I bought another one as soon as I got off the range. If you can find one buy it! If not the 700 Police would be my choice...Good Luck!

Cheers guys. How do I get to buy a Remington from the USA and import it here? The law enforcement model is $1440 here without scope and rings.

Sako,

I am told this rifle is not a production gun but comes out of the Remington Custom Shop.

I do not know where you can purchase over the internet. However, the local gun shop here had a run on them two weeks ago, the five they had in stock went quick.

They order some more of them and I believe they do have some now in stock. If you like I will be glad to provide that information to you send me a PM and I will look up their number for you.
