STRIPPING (NOT ON A POLE!!)
I'm thinking of stripping a Browning BLR of that high gloss finish and going to an oil rubbed. Seems like it's a uerthane coating.

Soeone has had to have done it. What stripper? How did it work out with the checkering?

Thanks!

Actually, ya, I've taken it off with Zip strip and then scraped the finish off with a knife. Several coats of Zip Strip were needed however.

before you do that you might want to give the finish a heavy rubdown with 0000 or 000 steel wool and see how you like it.

It yields a satin look and you just might stop right there.

I did this to a Remmie with a high gloss finish - worked GREAT. I used a marine stripper and then used boiled linsead oil - about 6 coats and a lot of XXXX wool.

Just a lovely finish.

I stripped a BPS stock with Acetone. remove the stock from the action and the recoilpad from the stock. Do it outdoors though.

Acetone -- how did it work out? Did it cut right through the top finish? Did you have to work it in with steel wool??

it is a bit dangerous to your health, but doing it outside in the wind, MEK will strip the epoxy

The only thing that I've found that works on the Browning Gloss is Permatex gasket remover in the aerosol can , CRC brand also works . Rough up the finish with 200 grit paper first , then spray on just enough to cover . Let it set till it bubbles up , then scrape with a plastic razor blade . May require several applications . Use a toothbrush or fine wire brush for the checkering .

The Browning stocks are Epoxy finished & so they will need a solvent that can remove epoxy.

Marc (the stock maker) recommended a method of doing an epoxy stock finish and he might have some ideas about removing it too.

Vapodog,
I have a BLR also that I'd like to take the gloss off, but not refinish the whole thing. What suggestions do you have on using the 0000 steel wool?

Vapodog's suggestion may well solve your problem, have done same and the process does "tame down" the glassy finish quite a lot.
Have went the chemical route before and it does work, but a damn mess to deal with in my experience. If you must strip all the finish, best tool I have found is a piece of heavy glass for it will not dull as a knife will. One rectangular piece, 3"x5" and one smaller one for working around the checkered areas and place masking tape/electricians tape on three sides for protection. It will take the finish off. You can do a Rem. 700 stock in about an hour or so and vacum will clean up the residue quickly. Just a suggestion.
