Lately I've been much bothered with flying deer, especially during the night. It happens a lot round here about this time of year but luckily I've managed to get an out of season and night shooting licence from the appropriate authority and I'm going to have a shot at them. I don't think I need a lamp as the one in front has a great light right in the middle of his face so I'm going to aim to shoot him right between the eyes.

Can anyone suggest a suitable rifle for this? I've got a 308W but am told that after about 50 yards the bullet drops hundreds of feet and so it would be useless for the longer shots required. I also have access to a .22lr and have seen on this forum that some people can shoot half inch groups at 600 yards with them. However, I've also seen a lot of people say that beyond 10 yards they are not powerful enough for rats. I also considered some sort of weatherby but am told that it is just impossible to get ammo in Africa for them and that, for some reason, lots of weatherby ammo is known to vanish. My way of thinking is that if Africa is short of ammo and the ammo for them is prone to vanish then it will not be long before we have the same problems here. I also don't want a low velocity cartridge as I've seen on this forum that such cartridges can make the bullet fail to expand and will have absolutely no shocking effect upon the deer. These deer have been rattling about on my roof in the middle of the night for a month now and I want them shocked good and proper. In saying that I don't want a high velocity cartridge either as I'm told that will cause the bullet to blow up on a shoulder and do very little damage. While I quite like the idea of things blowing up and while blowing up is not an action I've associated with doing little damage before I'm not willing to risk it under these circumstances, especially as I don't know ho robust the light on the face of the front one is. I also don't want a military calibre as I'm told if a bullet from one of those would land in some unstable socialist puppet state, say France, then it could be used to organised a coup and that would be my fault and I'd be in big trouble. The rifle I have weighs in about 6.5 pounds but I'm told this is far too heavy to carry and that something about 6.457 pounds would make my life so much easier so a 6.5 pound rifle is right out, though suggestions for a 47 pound rifle with a 72 inch barrel will be considered if it shoots one hole groups at 1700 yards in a howling gale.

So, any suggestions?

if you could manage to chisel all your bullets from solid granite then silver plate them the 308 should be good enough.
the lower weight should keep your velocities high enough for a decent 20 even maybe 30 yard shot with the puny cartridge.
if you are gonna take flying shots after the initial one on roof distances i'd go ahead and use the quad 50's mounted in a jeep so you can keep up the chase.
you should of course employ some one to operate the surplus aircraft light and tracers to mark your progress.
post target pictures at 42 and 12,000 yds as soon as possible for the forums argu err ummm discussion.

Forget about a rifle. You need a shotgun for flying deer. A 10 gauge with buckshot works great. Install a two liter plastic coke bottle as a silencer so that your neighbors don't complain about the noise.

I have a ___________ rifle in __________ Cal. It is the best thing since _____________. I have taken ___________ flying deer with it and have never lost one. It shoots _____" groups and handles like a dream. I think everyone should own one, because I do.

I have dozens of pics of awesome little groups and also recovered bullets to show the superior termimal performance. I also have hundereds of pics of all of the critters that my __________ rifle has killed. The only thing better than my __________ rifle is my own hunting prowess and champoinship marksmanship skills. I practice on sandbags in the summertime.

Might want to go with Ballistic Tips or SMKs to avoid a pass-through in an urban environment.

I suspect his technique needs improving.

As with Hind culling, take the lead Hind first, or the mother, then the 'calfie'.

It really is n't that difficult, just lead the luminous light on the front of the formation by the appropriate amount.

If done correctly, just about any medium deer, driven game rifle works: 8x64 S through 9.3x62 etc.

However, if you have deep pockets, and want to be traditional, may I suggest a P45 Scrooge. You'll have a Dickens of a fine gun and will spoil lots of fun, I mean meat.

You want to be in my shoes with deer wandering about on my roof all night! I haven't had any sleep in a month now and it takes me about 10 minutes to make a cup of coffee. I can hardly remember my own name.

However, I've mollycoddled some granite and covered it with silver so I'm all set in the projectile front.

They were back again last night and when I went out and shouted at them some fat bloke appeared and shouted back. What on earth was he doing on my roof? Right ignorant he was and he must have been on his way to a fancy dress party or something.

If I understand you correctly, I'd not suggest a rife, as such at all. Likely do better if you find two belt fed .45-70 full autoloaders with flash hiders. Weld them in tandam and mounted on a sturdy tripod, use them like WWII Orlikons for Anti-Aircraft work.

I got one with my 300 WM. I caught the little sucker when he came down to graze in my neighbors yard about 3 AM. The little bastard had lights all over him and was kinda wirey. The damn neighbor called the game warden, but he said he didn't have jurisdiction over those deer. The cops were real pricks about it though, confiscated the deer and my rifle too. Made me blow in this little tube thingey.
