I am looking into the possibility of doing a switch-barrel conversion to my Savage 10 FVSS between .223AI and 7-08. I am aware of the boltface and headspace considerations and also getting the wrench to loosen the nut. I have checked the magazine length (if the magazine block were removed) along with the bolt travel and it all seems to check out. I am starting to feel like this could be kind of an interesting conversion to try. There would be a fair loss of mag capacity but the versatility would be interesting. I am wondering if there is anything I have overlooked. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Contact Fred at Sharpshooter Supply, he can hook you up with Savage stuff. Also walk you through the switch over process. Or do the work for you.

If you just wanted to convert to a 7mm barrel using a cartridge capable of 225 yard deer hunting, etc., then the 7mm TCU should be easy. It's nothing more than a necked up .223 case and blown out with a sharp shoulder. I believe standard .223 cases necked up and not blown out will work fine in the chamber. Quality Ammo can probably supply proper head-stamped brass. You can get 2200 fps with 140 grain bullets.

The 223 and the 7-08 have different case head sizes so you can't do it....unless you intend to have two bolts...Its just not feasible.

I'm not a Savage expert, but I think it can be done, although not an easy switch.
The bolt face, which is comprised of the last inch or so of the bolt is replacable, with whatever case head diameter you wish and the barrel would be an easy switch.
I'll admit, just switching the barrel would be a much easier switch each time you wanted to change, but the bolt switch only adds a few minutes to the job.
