Not sure where to post -- although a larger bullet the 44mag outa a carbine is certainly not a big bore so I posted here.

I was wondering if anyone has ideas on a decent open sigh set up or even the right low magnification scope set up for a Ruger Deerfield Carbine.

I love this rifle and someday will hand it off to my son (only 4) as his first deer rifle (Northeast so he will have a chance with this one). But the stock iron sights SUCK!!!!!!

Have you looked at a Williams Foolproof peep sight? Seems like the way to go in giving a good sight picture and not ruining the balance of a light, fast gun.

XS Sight Systems (formerly Ashley Outdoors) makes ghost ring rear and post front sights for the Deerfield. They work very well, IMHO. Here is a link to the catalog.

You could try too mount a Bushnell zero magnification red/green dot scope. I assume this gun has the Ruger ring bases? The scope is light weight and fast target acquisition - as in shot gun fast. Infinite eye relief, no parallax at any range.

The tube is 30mm, but I belive 30mm ruger rings are available from leupold and others, maybe Ruger too.

For a scope a 1.5/5 Leupold or maybe the low powered Trijicon variable.

I have been very happy with a williams peep on the receiver and firesight front on my deerfield. Williams offers this as a set. The low comb of the deerfield makes for a very unnatural cheek weld with a scope and it is hard to get a quick scope picture.

I ended up putting a 1.5X Weaver Post and Crosshair on mine. Unbelievably fast but somewhatless handy. For open sites I am considering the Ashley but this would need a higher post as well. This has worked very well on my guide gun.

I've got a cheapie 4x on an older Ruger 44 carbine that was my Dad's (not a Deerfield, it's predecessor). It too would benefit from a nicer, less magnification scope or large diameter peep but I haven't changed it yet.

I cannot see regular open sights at all and have scopes on almost everything these days. However, I did put a Williams Foolproof and Fire Sight front on my old M 94 which allows me to use it. Does Williams make a similar set-up for the Deerfield? If so, it's a nice light, fast arrangement.

Good luck. -WSJ

BISCUT

My first Centerfire rifle was one of the original Ruger Deerstalker 44 Mag rifles.

Back then 240gr bullets were all that was avialable.

They killed deer like the Hammer of Thor.

Recently I killed a pig with a Hornady 225 Lever Evolution. It knocked him to the ground.

A 44 Mag Rifle kills way beyond what its "numbers" would suggest.

I feel the same. I just began developing loads with BEARTOOTH cast bullets. Cant wait to see what they do on a deer. I love the rifle but I cannot see SHIT outa those stoc Ruger iron sights. And my vision is 20/20...for now. I'm 37 and hear at about 40 the eyes start to go... moon
