Savage 340 A in 30-30. Anybody using this rifle. What could you tell me about this rifle. The local gunshop has one, I seen a few around before. Thinking about gettin it but had to ask here first. Its in great condition and the guy wants 249.95. Is this a good buy or not for a used gun. It has a peep sight I believe is Lyman.

Was the first rifle (other than a 22) that owned and used. Killed 6 deer with it (5 whitetails and 1 mule deer).

Mine had a 2X fixed power scope on it. My brother had a seemingly identical 340. While mine would group right at 1 MOA, his would never shoot within 2 MOA. I handloaded for both of them and did the bedding on both of them. I was a very active 16 year old at the time.

I liked the fact I could reload spitzer bullets in it because of the detachable bottom magazine unlike other friends who had lever action 30-30s. Used to load 150 gr Speers using IMR 3031.

I bought it used in the early 1960s for $50. I guess that would be worth about $250 now.

I replaced it for hunting purposes with a 35 Whelen because of the 30-30s limited range. I eventually traded it for an original 256 Newton that a fellow could no longer buy ammo for.

popcornGave mine to my cousin in law and it still shoots small groups after close to 60 years. If the condition is as you say it would be worth the money IMHO. beerroger

i paid about 75 more for mine.
they shoot rather well for an inexpensive gun.
mine likes cast bullets as much as jacketed..
it does have a pretty long throat.

Great little rifles. Accurate and underappreciated.

I've owned a couple.. that I paid $100 for..

ended up giving them away, to people who had no money and a desire for an accurate but inexpensive deer rifle... and cheap to shoot..

have to admit.. I still am hoping to replace one of those with a Model 54 Win in 30/30 instead...

the only reason I got rid of them was because they were just too "plain jane" for even me...

Ya Seafire, you are too sophisticated.

Cool

But I agree with you a Mod 54 would be cool. I gave my Mod 54 30-06 to my son and wish I still had it!

Barstooler;

just had trouble warming up to the little puppies..

had a chance at a Rem 600 in 30/30 a while ago in great shape, but passed on it also as too plain jane..

must admit tho, I have thought seriously of going retro and putting a stainless barrel on a Ruger 77 Mk 2 action, chambered in 30 Remington..or even 25 Remington..

the only reason of picking one of those over a 30/30, is the feeding obstacle..and the problems of a rim in the magazine..

I'd just like to have a really nice 30/30 or 30 Rem bolt action....

although a 35 Remington is also a consideration..

I love cartridges from days gone by..

I've owned a couple. A greatly undervalued rifle. No, it does not have the fit and finish of a Rigby. It does not have the three rings of steel of a Rem 700. It is not the rifleman's rifle. What it is, is an accurate, reliable, inexpensive gun that shoots good and feeds smoothly.
Since the price is low, you won't feel guilty redoing the stock or doing some other sort of custom work.
They are classics of the old blue collar world, kind of like bolt action shotguns. I recall one in 30/30 hanging by it's sling from a coat hook in the country store down the road from my home, back when I was growing up. There was big glass jar right under it that had shotshells, punkin balls and a few odd rifle shells for sale, by the piece.
They probably won't ever have a great collector value, but that was not what they were made for.

IMO it's considerably overpriced at $250

I picked up a fine M-70 in 7mm Mag recently for a hundred more and if you watch the used market for Rem 700s and push feed M-70s you do as well.

The Savage 340 is an OK rifle, I'm not knocking it.......but at $250 it's way too close to a much finer rifle

If it suits your needs and is what you want, who's to say it's too much?

Does it have a scope on it?? You have to use a side mount on it. I bubbaized mine on and it looked like 10# of organic fertilizer in a 5# sack but it would shoot tight and kill stuff which I guess is bottem line. A 30-30 is a pretty accurate round when you put it in a decent (bolt action) rifle. I'd get it.
