The 8mm 185 grain Remington Corelok bullet. I have never seen any 8X57 Mauser ammo loaded with this bullet, it is always a 170 roundnose. Was it ever factory loaded in the 8X57? Was this bullet designed for the 8mm Remington magnum? If anyone knows, please chime in.

So far as I know, the 185 gr PSPCL was designed to be a reloading component for the 8x57 mm Mauser, and the 8mm-06 (and the other 8mm/.32 wildcats). Given that it is a Cor-lock design, it would not be in my "go-to" list of bullets selected for the more powerful chamberings of the 8mm Remington Magnum or my own 325 WSM, except for target practice. I've not come across this bullet in a factory load anywhere...but then, I typically load my own cartridges for my several 8mm chamberings.

Hello from "Yurrup" (well England, UK actually)! I've no direct knowledge of the 8mm Remington Magnum but do of the 8x57 and the 8x60. So I hope this helps. The OAL loaded length of the 8x57 is identical for ALL bullet weights loaded into it by the Germans when it was a military round. It starts off in 1888 as the 8x57J with a 226 grain bullet and an OAL of 80.5mm or 3.17". In 1905 you get the larger S bore and a spitzer bullet of 154 grains with an OAL of 80.5mm or 3.17". Under the Nazis in 1934 you get the heavy 198 grain bullet with spitzer point and boat tail but the OAL remains the same. 80.5mm and 3.17". So there was never a German military loading with a 185 grain conventional bullet. However as a COMMERCIAL loading yes the 185 grain loading exists (actually 12.1 grams which is 187 grains). It is loaded even today by RWS. The muzzle velocity is 800 metres per second or 2600 fps. In fact two or three different bullet styles are offered by RWS. Privi Partizan offer their GROM bullet in 185 grains also in 8mm for the 8x57. So it is definitely an option used here, in Europe, in 8x57 and 8x60. Even also 8x68 where RWS offer that 12.1 gram or 187 grain bullet weight option. But are there any other clues about if the Remington offering is "meant" for the 8mm Remington Magnum? All I can help with is my experience of Hornady bullets in 8mm in 154, 175 and 195 grain. What I can say is that in ALL of the Hornady offerings that the cannelure roove is in the "wrong place" for loading to factory OAL in 8x57 and 8x60. If you seat any Hornady bullet in 8x57 to the cannelure groove it will be below the German OAL. Quite a lot so with the 195 grain Hornady Interlock. So that supposes me to believe that as far as Hornady goes the cannelure is indeed "set" for correct OAL in 8mm Remington Magnum and not 8x57. But cannelure or not 187 grain is a bullet weight loaded here in Europe in 8x57 and in a "magnum bombe" high velocity loading of the 8x60 that came into being after 1919 and the Versaillies Treaty ban in a defeated Germany on civilian ownership of military calibres. Hope it helps in a round about way. So, yes, that bullet weight is "correct" for 8x57, 8x60 and even 8x68.

The 185 grain REM CL is a fine bullet in the 8x57 Mauser on Deer and I would guess elk too from the performance on deer. Always opens and always exits deer for me. Don't know what it was designed for. I've reloaded the 185 Rem CL for my 8x57. Works great for deer - Don't think I try that bullet in a 8mm Rem Mag. ________ Ray

+ another for the 185 Rem bullet in the 8x57. Great hunting bullet for deer and elk. Not the most accurate when compared to Hornady or Sierra but quite sufficient with 1.5 moa possible with good rifle and load. My hunting load is 48 gr H4895 in WW cases at 2600 fps out of my Yugo VZ24/47. Larry Gibson
