Adjusting Remington 700 triggers.

Hello all, I just got a Remington 700 SPS DM in 7mm-08, and while I really like it, the trigger is fairly stiff. It's nice and crisp, just heavy. Are these things user-adjustable, or do I have to take it to a gunsmith? I'm not looking for a hair trigger or anything, just moderately light, so I can concentrate on the shot. Maybe I should mention, the gun was used, but barely so; it seems unlikely that anything was changed on it. Thanks.

Don't have a Remington anymore, but take the action out of the stock, look at thr trigger group, in front or back, you will fine a small screw, mite be coverd with plastic, turn it clockwise or counter, then test the pull to see if you have what you want. That's the way my BDL was.

Thanks very much, I'll give that a try. I sort of figured it was something like that, but I didn't want to try it without asking in case it was something that required the expertise of a gunsmith.

I wouldn't recommend that advise, their is a little more to it than just turning one screw because all three need to be adjusted. I found out the hard way when I was a youngster. I tried to adjust the settings myself and ended up blowing a hole in my truck door barely missing my leg, scared the sh#t out of me.

There are 3 screws and if you turn the wrong one you have a mess to fix if you don't have the experience. If you do a goog search you find the well written instructions. Otherwise give it to a smith to set up correctly.

Since this is your first 700 trigger, I would take it to your gunsmith and have him show you how. They aren't hard to adjust, but they have to be tested for slam fires. I wouldn't take a chance.

You may want to consider moving this to the Gunsmithing thread anyway. BUT, I know that a factory Rem. trigger can be reduced to a 2-3 pound crisp trigger pull in the hands of an experienced smith.

Otherwise, my strong advice is to call Jewel and order a trigger from them pre-set to the exact pound pull you want.

If you really need to know, then know how to do it right:

That quarterbore site in the previous site is the one I used and it worked great. Just go step by step.

when I first aquired my current Rem700 in 7mmMag
it had already been heavily customized including the trigger.

TWO things were wrong with the rifle, the previous yo-yo... oops I meant owner.. had replaced the firing pin spring with one of those "speedlock" springs that was rubbing heavily
against the inside of the bolt body.

The trigger was set with such a sensitive trigger, but still with a pull weight of >2lb that a hard jolt, like setting the rifle g-e-n-t-l-y in a rifle rack would cause the striker to fall (grotesquely insufficient sear engagement)
Holding the rifle in your left hand and slapping the recoil pad wih the heel of your hand would cause it to drop...

Closing the bolt rapidly would sometimes let the striker fall as the bolt was rotated closed

The trigger now breaks at a very crisp 22oz and even "bouncing" the rifle on it's recoil pad will not cause it to release.

I have adjusted a dozen Rem rifles triggers or so .... one pattern I seemed to notice.. the triggers that were more hassle to adjust were in ADLs versus BDLs and VLSs...

seemed the lower quality ones were sent to the cheaper ADL lines.....

Ditto on www.snipercountry.com directions. They are step by step and really detailed. I printed them out and get them out for reference every time I do a remington trigger just to have a step by step process.

Davis,

Allan has given you good instructions for adjusting the Mod 700 trigger. I've done a couple dozen of them and mostly they have worked out nicely. I really prefer to replace them with a Timney which is not expensive and can easily be installed and adjusted by the average guy. They are better than the factory triggers and easier to work with.
