Hello all,

I was asked to start loading for a friend of mine today. He has a mossberg (something or other) in 270. I have never loaded 270. Does anybody have any good or great loads that they will care to share. My buddy wants to use a 150 bullet. Hes not to picky on the type of bullet as long as its some type of soft point. He will be hunting Kansas Whitetail. I use Hodgdon 4831SC in my 25-06 and have come up with some hella good groups. I thought about starting with the 4831 and see how that works.

If anybody does have any loads they care to share they can email me at duckslayer79@cox.net or post it here. I would appreciate anything you folks could give out. The only thing Im worried about is the capability of his Mossberg. Me....... Sako's my bag baby!!!

Take care and thanks!

There are several loads recently contributed on exactly this subject on the reloading forum. Other powders (IMR 4350, RL22 among others) work well too, but H4831 has always been an excellent choice for the .270, and 150 grain flat base hunting bullets from Hornady, Sierra, Speer or Nosler (partitions) are good counterparts. Max loads in manuals are usually around 57-58 grains for this powder, so I'd start around 54 or so in an unknown gun and work up. No need for magnum primers.

270 Winchester and 4831 are like apple pie and vanilla ice cream, they were made for each other.

Your buddy is right to use a plain jane bullet as the tougher premium bullet were intended for animals larger than white tail. I'm not saying they won't work, but they do cost more.

Here is what you do, you go get some 150gr Speers or Hornadays. Flat base is the way to go. Take Winchester Western Cases and a standard large rifle primer. You then load 270's start at around 56 gr. and work up to 58 or 59 gr. If for some reason, that rifle will not shoot well with 150 gr bullets, take a 130 gr Speer SP. and around 59 to 60 gr of 4831 will make your day. I shoot nothing but 130 gr bullets in a number of 270's that I own. The Speer SP is just right on the Mulies and White Tails I have shot with it. If I needed more for a bullet, I just topped my loads with a Nosler Partition. Its an easy cartridge to load for.

I don't think anyone will ever post this question without 130 grain bullets and 4831 powder comming up. It's one of those combinations, that at least for most people, works with almost every .270 they've ever had.
I personally like Nosler 130 Ballistic Tips and H4831 in a mild load of 57.5 grains. It whacks deer like a hitman on pcp and is mild to shoot.

Good advise.
However, unless you just have to reload for him, go to Wal-Mart and buy a box of the cheap WW 150 grain soft points and give them a try. You may be surprised at the groups. I have in several calibers ( 7mm-08, 7mm Rem Mag, and 30-06). Less than 1" at 100 yds. And if it doesn't work out, you have the brass to work with.
I have not been able to do the same with Remington ammo. Not really bad groups, but the WW was better.

Thanks guys.

I think I will start with the 4831 because I have it on hand. Thanks for all the help.

My finicky Winny M70 Fwt really likes 56gr H4831 behind a Hornady 150gr SP lighty crimped in the cannelure by Winchester brass and sparked by Fed 210s. Not a prairie scorching load by any means, but it is very accurate in my rifle, your mileage may vary however [Wink] . Good luck.

For accuracy, and Not needing Super Power, I like to load 44 grains of H 380 with a 140 or 150 grain Ballistic Tip for a MV of 2600 fps.

If I need bigger, or more horsepower, I go to a bigger cartridge.

I really enjoy the accuracy and it is flatter shooting than I thought it would be, attesting to the aerodynamics of the 277 Bore Nosler Ballistic Tips.

56-57 grains of RL-22 behind a 140-grain Hornady InterLock with WLR primer. Though the 4831s are classic .270 powders, RL-22 is the new standard, in my view.

My Rem Model 700 likes a similar diet: 56 grains of IMR 4831 and a 150-grain Nosler Partition for just under 3000 fps.

I help a friend out with his 270 loads -- 53gr/ 4350/ Serria 130 (not a boat tale) wwlrp = about 3000 fps-- hard on deer and it shoots well -he has taken deer out to 288 long steps and at 50 --he is well pleased --I use 4350 because I have several pounds of it and it works well
