anyone shooting one of these? i was thinking of buying one i already own a 7-08,7mm rem. mag and 270 win.,25-06rem. can i squeeze a short mag in there somewhere and justify it?
Well lets see, are you trying to justify it to the Mrs. or to your self? If its a case of having a hankering for one, go for it, but if you are trying to justify it on performance, well you will be pretty much in about the same league as your 7 mag with light bullets. The fellows I know with 270WSM's love em, they shoot darn good, and will knock down all but the largest meanest critters in North America. Things that make you go HMMM.

The 270 Win and 7mm RM blanket the 270 WSM in bullet results. However there are some new rifles out that are a little different than what were made in the past. If this interests you then perhaps you could trade one of your existing rifles for a 270 WSM.
For instance the new Kimber 8400 Montana that I got last fall in 270 WSM would get you magnum performance in a SS rifle with a state of the art composite stock that weighs a 1/2 pound less than an Featherweight.
Most 7mm Mags weigh around 8.5 lbs with a scope and the Montana goes about 7.5. If your 270 Win is a Featherweight now then you might keep it for a back up.
IM 15 and i love my .270WSM its a great shooter. i would suggest it to anyone who wants a new rifle. The only thing i dont like about it is that it didnt come with 2 other WSM rifles. Like a "buy one get two free" sorta thing. Oh its a savage model 16 stainless synthetic.

Ballistically the 270wsm offers nothing that the 7mmremmag does not already provide and the selection of 7mm bullets is certainly larger and more suitable for use on larger game .

poulsbo;
Go for the 7mmWSM then the 325WSM and get a wider range of capabilities.
U talkin to me? what does the 7mmWSM have on the .270WSM beside wider selection of bullets? The truth is i was gonna get a 7mmWSM but the shop didnt have one and it would take weeks for one to come in so i got a .270WSM so i could be prepared for the season.

Critter_Killer;
As my post was adressed to poulsbo, I thought that it would have been clear that I wasn't "talkin to you", but since you are now adressing my post, I am. (talkin to you)
The 270WSM and the 7mmWSM are pretty much ballistic twins although the 7mmWSM has a very slight (theoretical) advantage in case capacity and bore cross section. Again very slight.
As you pointed out, the 7mm has a very real advantage in bullet choice.
As for the 30 caliber, I do have my Dad's 30/40 Krag, but that is the only 30 I have.
I do have three 8X57s, an 8mm-06 A.I. and I am gathering parts for an 8X68S plus I plan to get a 325WSM (they should have named it 8mmWSM) this summer.
It's pretty clear where my opinions lie on the best "medium bore".
Pardon me then. I couldnt tell who u were addressing. And yeah they shoulda named it 8mmWSM, im not familier at all with 8mms but i want one. Then a 7mmWSM, hey while im at it i will just stock up on all the WSM and WSSM calibers. for some reason short fat rounds get me ready to shoot my gun (no pun intended) during deer season.

Just so you know, all my distributors are now closing out a lot of their wsm and wssm calibers, especially the wssm's. I can buy some model 70's for 175 bucks off of regular wholesale. What does this tell you about these rifles, maybe not selling? There are especially a lot of the 7mm wsm's. Looks like it's future is in doubt. You want a Winchester in a certain caliber or configuration, you better get it soon. It's not only Winchester though, there are a lot of Remingtons on closeout too. Just check their website and you will see that some models have "disappeared" for 2005.
Because their Saum's suck worse yet. They are late to the party. I would imagine that they are losing market share and are doing that to help sales. By the way, the only rifles chambered for the wsm's in Remmy's line as far as I can find are the SPS blue synthetic. If you look hard you may find one at Gander Mountain, but that is the only place I have seen one. They don't even show up on Gunbroker very much. Reason? Probably that they weigh a full pound more than the Browning abolt and 3/4 of a pound more than The Winchester ultimate shadow. How many Kimbers, Sako's, Weatherby's, Savages, or Rugers do you see chambered for Rem Saum.

I agree but the original post was predicting the demise of thr WSMs, and the Kimbers, Sakos, Savages etc. ARE chambered in WSMs.
Perhaps it is just that everyone is getting their piece of the pie now, leaving less of it for Winchester.

Possibly, but, around this area of Wisconsin, the craze never really took off. Hunters here are used to buying a box of corelocts for 10 bucks and going hunting. The only guys that bought the wsm's here are the gun nuts like me. My brother has about 5 270's for him and his kids cause he doesn't want to buy several kinds of ammo. Lots of guys with 06's too. Some 308 and some 300 win mag. At 25 bucks and up for ammo for the wsm's, they are going to have trouble around this rural area.
