Ruger Mark I 9,3 X 62MM Conversion?

Would like to ask about possible 9,3 X 62MM conversions and ask for opinions on the different actions types available on the used market for such a project.

My thought is a Ruger mark I in 30-06 to be used as a basis for the project. Is the mark I action a feasable choice? Also...does any one make barrels for the Ruger in 9,3 and if so who and how to contact? And last question, how difficult REALLY is this sort of project?

Would another action type be more suitable? (mauser 98/Mod 70)

Thanks in advance for your reply's and suggestions. S-M

I think it would work quite well and would not be such an expensive project.

Good luck you have chosen a great calibre. Also just buy lapua 9.3x62 brass do not bother mucking about necking 30/06 stuff up.

Hey S-M

I have a Ruger#1 that I re-tubed in .35 Whelen and I just love it! I put a 24 inch Douglas barrel with a 10 twist on it.

If I had it to do over again, I would have went to a 26 or a 28 inch tube because the Ruger #1's are short to start with.

My 24 inch barrel makes the rifle almost stock heavy......if anything it is neutral ......another two or so inches would make it barrel heavy just a little.......which IMHO makes it nicer to hold and shoot.

I replaced the trigger with a TJ Moyer Trigger and it breaks at a crisp 2 lbs.

got a real nice young bull moose in Newfoundland two years ago with it.

Thanks

George

Ruger should be fine. I'd go with a pac-nor barrel. Send them your action, ask for a bead-blasted (matte) stainless #4 contour with a 1-12" twist at whatever length you want (I'd recommend 23"). It will cost you $400, and that includes an action squaring and barrel lapping.

www.pac-nor.com

Use Norma or Lapua brass, avoid Sellier and Bellot brass and ammo like the plague. You need look no futher than H414 and GM210M or WLR primers. Best accuracy results for me have been with H414 and the Nosler 250.

The 35 Whelen is also an excellent choice if you don't want to go with the more exotic 9.3.

Concur with the others, a pac-nor barrel in your Ruger #1 would work very well. I had a 9.3x62 made up on a VZ-24 mauser action with a pac-nor barrel 4-5 years ago, it works very well.

Cannot emphasize enough getting the right brass, i.e., NORMA, which is available from all the Missouri based reloading supply houses. Do not fool with home made out of .30-06, the 9.3x62 is a few clicks off from 06 specs. The right brass is just too available. It is a shame that loaded ammo in this caliber is so expensive, but with the availability of good brass and excellent bullets from Nosler, Speer, Barnes, Norma, Lapua, RWS, and Swift, not to worry at all. There is nothing to loading the cartridge.

The Ruger No.1 is and excellent choice for a 9.32x62 but noone makes a 1x12 twist to my knowledge they are all 1x14 and that is what you want anyway...It will shoot all weights from 230 to 320 grs.....

Go with a Lothar Walther 26 inch barrel or even better a 28 inch and give that #1 some wt. up front for off hand shooting..and it will dance with a 375 H&H....

Every 9.3x62 I've had been built has been with a 1-12 twist. Douglas offers only 1-10 and 1-12; pac-nor only offers 1-12.

I think most factory rifles (CZ, Sako, etc.) are a slower twist, like the 1-14, but I am not sure about this.

All this being said, I expect that Ray is right; it probably makes no difference, even with the heavier bullets. I certainly have no complaints about the 1-12.
