Krieger barrels

Great pipe but would suggest 26" with a 270 Wea.
Using 130 gr bullets:
270 Win: 3250 FPS with 24" barrel
270 Wea: 3450 FPS with 26" barrel
You may not be gaining a lot going 24" with the Wea. but sometimes you get some better velocity with the custom pipes.
I have both a like both cartridges.
I have a couple of Krieger barrels. Very accurate and easy to clean.

I would definitely go with at least 26; on my LR rigs I have gone to 28/29 in bbls and don't regret it.

For more moderate cartridges like a .338 WM or .375 H&H I prefer 24. I bobbed my .416 to 22 and love it that way. Point I am making is I don't put long pipes on everything, but eezridr is spot on IMO - except his choice of bullet weights - go heavier!

I have one Kreiger SS barrel. It’s very accurate.
Ditto what others said on 26”.

Chuck, I've shot Krieger barrels in my serious long range guns for over 15 years and can honestly say that I've never gotten or seen a bad one.

A lot of of barrel makers can make great barrels but I don't think that Krieger can make a bad one.

I cant tell you an exact number, but I have used between 30 and 40 Krieger barrels on my 6ppc over the last 16 or so years. I have tried many other makers in that time also, and I keep coming back to Krieger. I find them to be the most consistent barrels on offer for wringing out the most accuracy possible.

I only built one 270 Weatherby for a customer and used a 26" #5 contour Brux. That rifle absolutely hammered. My customer sent me several pics of 1/2 MOA groups out to 5 or 600 yards (5 shot if I remember correctly). That was 3 or 4 years ago. I'd feel perfectly comfortable building the same with a Krieger.

One of my .338L's has a Brux. Very accurate.

Krieger barrels are first class, Ive had good luck with them...My personal favorite is Lothar Walther, The LW is simply always accurate beyond my requirements..

Great barrels but for that hot of a round I would be inclined to QPQ it or a carbon steel Kreiger. Unless you don't plan a lot of rounds.

I do the same thing with my long range rifles. If one is really accurate (less than 1/2 MOA at 500 yards) I shoot it almost exclusively at ranges of 700 or more, mostly at 800. I might use one of my very accurate LR guns at 500 if I am gong shooting in a stiff wind.

If a bbl shoots 1/2 to 3/4, I use it for gong shooting at 500. Anything worse and it tends to sit in the rack in loading room (safe space is reserved for accurate rifles) or get rebarreled.

One thing I have learned is that there are few accurate barrels that don't shoot a variety of loads well. Sometimes a barrel is very particular about a certain seating length, but a small difference in powder weight doesn't miraculously turn a 1 MOA bbl into less than 1/2.

I've got few Kreiger and some others. My 270Wby has Rock Creek barrel @ 26".

Mike Rock got his start at Obermeyrs same as Kreiger,Brux and Bartlein got start @ Kreiger. There all up in Wisconsin same place as Obermeyer.

I've probably worn out 3 Krieger barrels, as many Douglas barrels and an Obermeyer barrel shooting highpower.

The Douglas barrels shot as well as the Krieger barrels and were half the price. The Krieger and Obermeyr barrels cleaned up easier than the Douglas barrels.

My accuracy standard for a rifle was that it could group 10 shots into 2.5-3" at 300 yards without regard to conditions or barrel temp. If your rifle could do that and make a nice round group it was a helluva match rifle and if you could hold it that well you could win the National Championship at Camp Perry with that rifle.

Almost nobody can hold a rifle that well...all the internet BS stops in the target pits...

Haha, ain't that the truth!

1 MOA at 300 yards is FINE shooting and a feller best be shooting well under 1" at 100 yards to accomplish 3" at 300!

I've seen thousands of shooter's targets over the years and damn few are sub MOA yet on the internet everyone shoots that well.

Kreigers are good barrels and 26"+ is the way to go with that race-horse round.

My take on barrels; I have used exactly 3 Kriegers; one of them was the crookedest barrel ever. They shot fine. But not worth the money when Douglas makes as good or better a product. That is all I use now.
Would not use some of the others as tent stakes, for various reasons. Pac Nor; nothing special. Shilen; ok. Rock; quality varies but ok; LW; just no, never.
Douglas. Guys seem to like the newer names but Douglas started it all. They are very nice to deal with and have many more custom options than anyone else. And they keep a massive inventory so delivery is fast; they keep the air gauged and Mag particle inspected blanks in inventory and CNC contour them when you order one.
Does anyone else mag particle inspect every barrel them make?

One would have to shoot the different brands of barrels under very similar conditions to get a good comparison.Same chambering, loads,cleaning method, same smith etc...

I have used a few different barrel makers for BR competition. BR shooters usually keep a few barrels on hand and save the best ones for the big match. I almost always go to Douglas for hunting rifles. The best grade Douglas is a heck of a barrel.

I don't see Douglas showing up much in competitive shooting. There must be a reason for that.

Google the topic; Douglas is not only not at the top, they don't even show up on the list.
