Does anyone know if Ruger ever chambered their #1 with 300 H&H? If anyone here owns a Ruger #1, what caliber do you have and how do you like it?

I've always thought the #1 was just made for long carts. & the .300h&h would be my choice over a .300wm. I have 2, 7mm Dakota & a .338x74Kieth. I love my #1s, they are a classy rifle to hunt with. If I every get a .30cal. it would be a .300h&h in a #1. thumb

Probably my favorite #1 is the one in my hands at the time I'm holding it. thumb Serious;y though, I think my latest #1 may just end up being the top dog in my collection. It's a #1S in .300 Win. mag. and it's one hell of a good shooter. No, it's not the mosta ccurate of my #1s, but I just like the feel and the way it carries. It's a crying shame Ruger dropped that model with the exception of the 45-70, which in my opinion need about four more inches of barrel. But then again, I think Ruger has made some very dumb moves lately like non-adjustable triggers, and crappy excuses for a recoil pad on their hard kicking rifles. thumbdown Shooting their .416 Rigby #1 can be an exercise in masochism with that skimpy piece of garbage. I wonder if they'll ever get that one right?

I've just the one no 1 it's the RSI in 7x57.
What a neat little rifle, in what I think of as the ideal round for the model. Every body should have one.

You all are making me want one even more. I have always loved the look and feel of the #1, but have never owned one. I am hoping to find that 300H&H. Thanks for your comments.

My current favorite is a No.1-S in .338 Winchester. Over the past 20 years, I have had them in .25-06, .375 H&H, .357 Magnum, .243 Winchester, 7x57 Mauser. I also used to have a No.3 in .30-40 Krag. I always see to have at least one around at any given time.

I may be wrong, probably am, but I think Ruger chambered a run of No.1's in 300 H&H, but it was a very limited run. Those rifles are commanding some ridiculous prices now. Might be better off finding an '06 and rechambering to the 300 H&H.

Ruger did the limited run of .300 H&H's in the late '80s or very early '90s for Jerry's Sports Center. They were in the 1-S configuration. I ordered one for a customer back when they were released and kick myself for not getting a couple for myself. I should have got one to shoot and one to put up for an investment. I had a model 70 in H&H and didn't really want more than one rifle in the same caliber at the time. Another VERY limited run rifle that I REALLY should have bought a few of was the M77 International (RSI) in .358 Win., also made for Jerry's. I vividly remember them in the flyer and have never seen a single specimen offered for sale since. They obviously only made a handful and these would be worth a small fortune today!

I'm going to get one in 405 WCF to go with my 1895, as soon as I can afford it.

BeMan, Santa brought me a No.1 Grey Laminate Stainless in 7mmRM. I topped it with a Leo' VXIII in 3.5x10x50. I have fire formed cases and have been load testing with 140grn. Nosler Accubonds. Out at 200 I have been noticing the trend of the sssllloooooowwwwweeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr the powder the better it is getting. Retumbo is a good one but I haven't tried IMR7828 or RL25 yet, that was YET.
As far as am I happy with it OH YA BABY. It feels good when shooting it, not warm and fuzzy good (although that does come into play) but, comfortable good. Shouldering, grip, trigger and recoil all come together well for me.I wouldn't hesitate to get many, MANY more.

Good luck,
smedley

I have a modified Ruger I b in .300H&H. It has a Lothar Walther barrel and a light custumized stock, mounted with a Swarovski 3-10x42 in Leupold rings. Shoots great wih 200grs NP (65grs R19). Nice gun for our red stags!

Someplace I thought I read that Ruger made some special runs of #1's in a sequence of years, in certain calibers, and the 300H&H was the only one that didn't immediately sell out. Sorry, I don't have a reference. For me it is an ideal cartridge for a #1 (although my two are in different calibers) because of its easy loading (under a scope) length. Besides, it just looks better than the ugly 300 WM. I love my #1s, although I probably will replace them with something else, like a custom Hagn or Dakota single - at 5 to 10 times the price.

A gentleman who visits our range once in a while, who only target shoots anymore he said, and collects only Ruger Number ONEs...

He had one in a 300 H & H, I shot one day...He indicated that he got it, and at the time it was a one of a run of 50 made by either Jerry's or Davison's? ( the Distributor out of Arizona)...

It was marked 300 H & H on the barrel, and it was a stainless steel barrel and a grey laminate stock and forend...
