Please tell me the max charge for .338 Win Mag 225 gr TSX using IMR 7828. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If the 270 won't do it the .338 will, if the 338 won't I can't afford the hunt!

That powder is not listed in the Barnes #4. The Hodgdon 2008 Annual doesn't list TSX but gives a compressed load of 77.0 gr for a 225 Hornady SP The Lyman 48th ed gives a max of 76 gr wt a 225 gr jacketed SP "Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult."

Doh. Don't TSX's reach their max a with lighter charges then most lead core bullets? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If the 270 won't do it the .338 will, if the 338 won't I can't afford the hunt!

As I remember it's the opposite. With less bearing surface because of the bands they move down the bore more easily. At one time Barnes said that you could use the max load for the old Barnes bullets as the starting load for the TSX. I would suggest either calling Barnes for their suggestions and/or using a load for another bullet reduces by 3% or so and going up in steps until you are happy with accuracy or see sign of pressure. I'll second on contacting the tech guys at Barnes and Hodgdon. Customer service with both companies is excellent. Good luck

The Hodgdon website lists IMR7828 with a 225gr HDY sp pt bullet as min 72.0 max 77.0, but they do not list a 225 gr TSX, TSX load data started in Barnes #4, and as stated, doesn't show 7828. If you are open to another powder choice, I would recommend RL22, it gives the highest velocities and is very accurate. John

I have found IMR 7828 to be to slow for my 338 with the 225 tsx. I have found R-19 to work very well. With 250 Partitions R-22 worked well.

I looked at my Barnes manual and didn't see 7828 listed for the 338. I would think it would be a tad slow as I use it in my 338-378 Wby with good results. Now there is a cartridge that likes slower powders. Ken.... "The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn't so. " - Ronald Reagan

I think TJAY and Heat are correct. 7828 is going to be too slow. Look in the RL19, 4350 range. LWD
