These things keep poping up to me and asked earlier, but what would be a fair price for one of these in unfired condition?? I realize the action alone is worth having, but stock, barrel, etc. is in New condition and may want to keep as is for a while. Caliber happens to be 270 and understand they used Douglas Ultra Rifles barrels. All help appreciated.

That is a quality rife. Don't know its value in your area but it will be on par with a Rem 700/Win 70 in simular condition. I mean it's a shooter, really not a collector item.

Sure sounds like a heck of a rifle.
You say you see these alot ? Kind of funny cause I go to gun shows all the freakin time , and never saw one.
I have seen sako,s marked H&R and lots of diffrrent variations of the FN.
Does the FN have the side safty or the safty on the bolt. ?
I also have an origional FN 270 , that is a very nice rifle, like new when I bought it for 600.00. I have used it a bit now and it shows just a little.
I would like to see a picture of this H&R.
FYI , my smith has a very clean JC higgins .270 FN, and is asking 500.00 , thats a little high to me but I could probably get it for less.
How much is being asked for this rifle you are looking at ?

I have 2 301s,one 25-06, looks new. The seller was extremely optimistic on the 270. The 270 is very accurate according to my daughter who has 2 hogs to her credit . I paid over 600 ea for them. Blue Book says 440 or somesuch. I defy you to find one for that. That being said. I would say 550 is a fair price unless something special.

Nice rifles, but I think they cut all of the barrels at 22 inches. Caring neither for roll-over cheekpieces or shorter barrels, I've never been tempted by one. But considering a pedestrian Remington 700 BDL wholesales for about $650, the much more desirable FN H&R looks like a relative bargain.

Thanks for the responses. As for seeing these at gun shows, probably not the best place to find interesting pieces or at least not around here for always seems to be pretty much the same inventory, just on different tables! As for "always poping up..." I say that for two of nearly the same conditon, configuration, etc. has came my way in the past 60 days. To me that is "poping up" for it has been years since I actually saw one that had not been, shall we say, customized. New FN action/Douglas barrels/very nice wood stock should not be altered when there are tons of military surplus 98 style actions around waiting to be revitalized. To each his own. I will buy this one and again, thanks.

I own 3 H&R 300's & my hunting partner owns 2 300's & 2 301's. Here are just some thoughts on the FN actioned 1's in no order.
1. They look bad but flle great to shoot, they hold better than any sporting rifle I own off hand.

2. Some of their triggers are junk, fi there are nylon parts in your trigger replace it with an aftermarket trigger. I use Sako's but timley are fine.

3.I have 1 marked ultra which should have a polygon rifling but it looks like a normal Douglas to me.

4. The early stocks finish has a tendancy to crack uniformly parrell to the butt plate no big deal in a hunting rifle.

5.The bottom metal on the Fn's is pot metal but i've hever had 1 break or open unexpectedly.

6. The stock is a Fajen Aristocrat & the barrel is a Douglas on all models.

I use a Sako action 300 as my wood stocked hunting rifle & it was the best $200.00 I ever spent. It came with a Lyman permacenter All American 4x scope.

Appreciate the feedback. Did not pay attention to the bottom metal on these but do have some Argentines and curious if they would fit?? Would think so, but not sure. Primary purpose for me buying is the FN action and after hunting, shooting, etc. for a season or so, will build to something other than std. calibers as 270. Again thanks for the feedback.

Hey Rick, how have you been, still chasing the "bad guys??" Don't believe there is any shortage of them in our area. Going to get Whiting to do a big bore shoot at Whitehorse this Spring and if I can arrange, will let you and Mike know for sure. Hope that Parker Hale is working out for you. Those things are lot of gun for the bucks. If you are shooting lead from Mike, drop me a PM and let me know what loads you are using for the Lott. Stay in touch.

Martin,

I sure hope you let me know about a big bore shoot! Would be fun to get out and play.

Hoping the weather and the pipeline folks will allow me to shoot the .416 Aagaard tomorrow. (Is built on a Sears commercial FN action. Going to be my North American Bear gun Wink )

If you are just looking for an FN action, I am curious what you will be paying for these H&Rs. I know where there is a JC higgins FN for .375...tj3006

I think this is about the current market for a H&R Ultra in VG condition, if I just wanted an action I'd go Sears.

300Fn-$500-575
300 Sako-$600-650
300 MkX- $400-450

301 Fn- $575
301Sako- looking for 1 pm me if you find 1
301MkX-$425-475

My hunting pantner found a VG 301 mkx in a pawn shop for $275 so there are deals to be found. Watch out for the magnums because they have very thin 22" barrels in the 300 & 18.5" in the 301.

As for what I am paying for the H&R's 500.00 NIB. Both 270's and will keep one and alter as time/funds permit and keep the other one in original condition. As others have suggested, may change out trigger, have some excellent English Walnut blanks/stocks, use different bottom metal, etc. Basically project guns. Figure I can always get my money back down the road if needed. Don't we always use that logic when buying/building guns??
