My 300 is a lot more accurate with 165 gr bullets than the 180's I've tried. I want good pentration, so I'm thinking of moving up to a premium bullet for bigger game. Has anyone used the 165/168 grain TSX BT or Nosler partition in a 300 WM on elk? How did it perform?

I stoke my .300 WM with 168 grs TSX, and a sweet combination it is. I have not used it on Elk, but I have taken game of similar tenacity (e.g. Gemsbok in Africa). I would use the 165/168 grs TSX on Elk without a second thought, in fact I plan to do exactly that this coming fall in MT. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... Id have to go with the TSX but they shoot VERY good in my gun. You can't kill them setting on the couch.

Is it possible to get reasonable 308 Win. loads with a 200 Gr. TSX due to the length of the bullet? I'd seriously like to try it on large game due to it's ability to penetrate. Geoff Shooter

I have killed too many with Nosler Partitions. I'll stay with what works really well. Free men should not be subjected to permits, paperwork and taxation in order to carry any firearm. NRA Benefactor

i have killed several elk with the 300 wsm and the 300 wm, using 180gr failsafes and 180gr partitions. they both worked as advertised and i have yet to recover a bullet. seems to me a 300 wsm with accurate 180gr partitions is a perfect match. and the same could be said for the 300 win mag as well. ymmv...... sure wish failsafes were still made!

I don't see why 180 grain TSX bullets and R22 can't give you the accuracy you want and more.I have 5 300WM and have developed loads for each one, experimenting with different powders bullets etc...The secret to accuracy in the 300WM is Lapua cases.

I'd recommend that you step up in weight a bit. For the 300win, the 180 grainers are classic. I shoot 180s for everything from small whitetails on up. I have had better accuracy with the TSX than the NP, but that's a pretty typical finding. I have a 180TSX/RL-22 load that shoots consistently sub-MOA 5 shot groups in my factory Rem 700. That load combination is very popular and works for just everybody that tries it. Good luck!

I would load some 168 and 180 TSX bullets with Re22, work up to near max in your rifle and see which one it likes. If you have the time and money, do the same with the partitions in 165 and 180. Whichever one your rifle shoots best is what you should go with. Me personally, I will agree with some of the above recommendations and try for a 180 first just because it does fit well with the 300 wm. If you cannot get a decent hunting load with a 180 partition or TSX using Re22, H1000, or Retumbo, then, I'd say your rifle needs tweeking. Go for accuracy, not velocity. Those bullets do very very well in the 2400 to 2700 fps range upon impact. I think too many hunters concentrate on velocity. Let's face it, the 300 WM and a stout bullet at its minimum velocity is going to knock the largest bull elk on its arse at 350 yards and under.
