I had been looking for an inexpensive 30/06 for wife for a while and found this on GB. I was going to cut the stock down anyway so when I saw this one already cut I bought it.

I'm curious what anyone can tell me about it from the pictures.

Some of these were produced with a trigger safety and a crummy, difficult-to-operate bolt release. This model looks superior to that. In the 50's a lot of FN actions or barreled actions were imported and labeled by Sears, Santa Barbara Arms, etc. Yours is similar, though I think Husqvarna made their own actions. The FN's were great actions, but some of the barrels attached by others were not so good. I suspect that yours will shoot well and be a very satisfactory rifle, though the wife might appreciate a new recoil pad. That's a lot of rifle for $355.

That one was built on a Commercial FN "H" ring 98 action. Nice score.

Nice rifle! It's dedicated to open sights. If your wife plans on using optics you should look at something to bring her cheek weld up.

Great score. These rifles are the best value for the money you can get. The quality of rifles made today at even double the price you paid isn't even close.

That appears to be a newer Husky than the pre-war rifles I'm familiar with. Those from before WWII were darn good rifles. Simpsons Ltd. has a pile of them in 9.3 X 57 and quite a few in 30-06 at pretty fair prices, if you shop them.

It oughta be considering FN didn't start making that commercial action until 1948.

Most of Simpson's remaining stock have been altered and not always in a good way. That, or they have cracked stocks.

Your's is a nice Husqvarna 640 with an aftermarket butt pad. They were made by FN, are nicely finished, and you got that one for a very good price.

If I had seen it I would have punched the sale button..Those are real nice rifles, about as good a FN or 98 Mauser as you can buy and the action alone is worth $500. This one looks to me to be a 98 Mauser made in the early 40s into the early 50s and pre FN, gun, but either one is. the model 640 came along later and is also a fine gun..

Ray, that one is a 640 and was made in 1950 on an FN Commercial 98. Sheesh!

Man - those are a steal!

A 9.3X57 with good bore and poor stock at $225 is unbelievable! Even if you put an after market stock on - that would be a great rifle for less than $400.

You could ream it out to a 9.3X62 and add a nice stock on and do a home project for less than $700 I guess.

Yes I agree - definitely a FN action. I have owned an Austrian 7X64 on an identical action with the barrel stamped AKAH

I have noticed that Ray Atkinson frequently posts incorrect information.

Of course it is a post-WW2 640 with an FN large ring 98 action. If it was an earlier Husqvarna, it would have had a small ring 1894/1896/1938 style military or commercial "strengthened" (no thumb cut) action.

Simpson LTD in Galesburg, IL, is a good source for Husqvarnas, but they import them in shipping container lots, hundreds and hundreds at a time. Their shop in Galesburg is a real, old-time, gun shop and if they'll let you in the back, you can pick through all the rifles to find the one, probably more than one, that best fits your needs. Bring you dealer's FFL with you, otherwise you'll be dogged by Illinois' restrictive gun laws. If you call Simpson, ask for Floyd, he'll take good care of you.

By the way; m640 was the first Husqvarna model with caliber .30-06 so there is no question.

260, I have yet to have the privilege of actually visiting Simpsons Ltd. but have had nothing but good results dealing with them over the phone and on line. I have heard some really good stuff about the shop itself. They're just generally a really good place to look for European guns in general and Germanic stuff in particular.

Just picked up the rifle (thanks Aaron Little!)

I'm very impressed with the quality of the rifle.

I noticed the safety is marked "Mark II" and I was wondering if that is a factory safety or aftermarket.

I appreciate all the responses.

Sounds like a Dayton Traister aftermarket safety.

Does it look like this: Mark II safety
