I was at the Range today shooting my Savage 7mm-08. For the 2nd day in a row, the Savage was very inconsistant and I have lost my confidence in it and become frustrated. So, I took it to the store and traded it in. I come home with a Weatherby Mark V in 7mm-08. I am not real familiar with Weatherby's other than knowing that they cost alot. What do you all think about this trade. How accurate can I expect this Mark V to be? Every rifle is different regardless of brand. Some rifles shoot well with one load but not another. You have to shoot it to see. -------------------- THANOS WAS RIGHT!

Yep I like finding guys like you on the range. One can buy some good rifles cheap. I would say two days on the range isn't enough to make or break a rifle unless one has check every thing out to start with, tryed a differant scope on it had some one else shoot it ect. Every company makes and sells rifle that shoot great out of the box. They also make and sell rifles that shoot with some work. They also make and sell some rifles that need a lot more. If you are looking for one that shoots great out of the box one might have to trade, sell and try several differant ones before one gets one you like. But I would make sure before I trade it of that it is a bad rifle and not the scope, ammo or shooter. Trading up or down is very costly.

Yeah, what p dog said. Wow, traded the mini-van for a Cadillac, huh? I love Weatherbys but I've owned 4 Savages, all used, and everyone was a shooter and judging from all the deer burgers so did the deer. I'm sure there are bad ones but I too would have had another shooter try it after I had tried several different types of ammo. Was it one of the "packages"? I would definately tried a different scope. Maybe you did all of the above but I'd still be trying. That's just me. I keep thinking this marriage will work out some day. It's only been 24 years.

Well Bearbuck, if you traded even and the Weatherby is in good condition you did real well. If the condition of the rifles aren't comprable or you had to give some boot, it becomes a little more objective--and makes some of the other posters views more applicable--maybe-- At any rate, I've seen and shot quite a few Weatherby's that shot well, a few that didn't. Having said that, I have shot a bunch of Savages, and they all shot well---go figure-- If you feel good about the trade, and like the feel of your new rifle, you did good. I hope it's a real shooter for you. Good Luck--Don

I think Weatherby has (or used to have) an accuracy claim of 3 shots at 100 yards in 1.5" or less. They are an extremely strong rifle. Depending on the load combination for your cartridge, you will have either a good shooting rifle, or a very good shooting rifle. Depending on what model/style/age of rifle you got, you may have a "shiny finish" stock. If so, and if you don't like that, you and gently rub the surface with 4/0 (0000) steel wool. You are just trying to put a satin finish on the existing polyurethane finish (if shiny). Your not trying to run OFF the finish. Hope it shoots for you. They tend to have a fair amount of freebore, so you may want to check the loaded cartridge's OAL. Sometimes, a round nose bullet (with its long bearing surface) closes the gap on long throats, and rewards the shooter with good groups. It may save you time and frustration at the shooting/loading bench. good luck

Loaded some Sierra Spitzer SPBT and they shot awesome. .795" at 100 yards and 5 shots. However, I still need to shoot this load a few times before I will say it is a proven. But much better than I was getting with the Savage. Now, The Savage I had was used. I have had it for about 2 years and last year it was shooting great. I was using the Horn. SSt's. Had alot left from last year and took it out recently to make sure all was well with season coming, I have been preoccupied with my 30-06 and loading this summer, anyway, the load that was great last year was spraying on me and I had done nothing to the rifle or loads. Tried a variety of fixes. Even went and bedded the action and floated the barrel. Still nothing. That is when I said my confidence is gone. Now for the trade. the Weatheby was new. Mark V Synthetic. I had to trade the Savage rifle with the Leupold scope that was on it. OUCH!!! and to boot a auto handgun that had not seen daylight in I don't know how long. So I am thrilled with the trade and the weatherby fits me like a glove. I have to say better than any rifle I have shouldered! Just to make this clear, I would not hesitate to buy another Savage and will do so, and probably many. I think they are great rifles and I admire their looks and action. It just so happens that mine went afloat. " The Greatest Reflection of the Kind of Person You Are, can be Given and Answered best by the People who Work for You rather than those You Work For. Hey Bearbuck, I've got a buddy in Belmont, NC who was telling me about his new 308Win Weatherby Ultra-Lightweight and went on and on about how good it felt. Finally managed to get over to visit him and I had to agree, it sure felt great. Nice and light with an excellent stock design. It was about time for my normal 308Win trade, so when I did, I got a Wby U-Lt also. It will average in the 8s (meaning 6s<->10s) and I've not had a chance to shoot it very much. Not the most accurate 308Win I've had, but it will probably average in the 6s when I get a Load it really likes. Best of luck with your new rifle.
