I had an old winchester model 70 pushfeed 270 Win featherweight sitting around and finally decided to do something with it. Going to rebarrel it with a Krieger 24" tube, have it bedded and put back into the featherweight stock. Should be a nice all around deer/plains game rifle that I don't have to worry too much about nicks, dings, and scratches. The 200 Nosler Accubond should do nicely!

Just my humble opinion but why not just go to a .338 bore? More bullets to choose from that's for certain.

Well I thought about that but I already have a 338 WM and a 338 RUM so I wanted something just a little bit different.

The 8-06 is a good round, but the 338-06 is a bit better IMO. Because you have other 338s is agood reason to go w/ a lt.wt. 338-06. Using 200grNAB @ 2800fps or 210grNP @ 2750fps, it's a good all round NA cart. Just my nickles worth.

I'm going to go the the other way with this since you already have a .338 covered why not a 6.5-06?

Sounds like a nice project. I have a couple 8x60S's and there is no practical difference between them and teh 8mm-06. That said, I also have a really sweet 338-06. Practically speaking, nothing shot with any of these will know the difference. If you go with the fast twist you can even shoot 250's in your '06.

Good choice. My gun is currently being rebarreled to 8mm-06 and should be ready next month. There are plenty of bullets available. I have 185gr Corelokts, 200gr HotCors, and 200gr Barnes ready to load when my gun is done. This will be my elk gun next season.

I'd rather have a stock 8x57 than a 8mm-06 but thats me. Better still as several have mentioned, I'd much rather have a 338-06.

Thanks for the input. I am still liking the 8mm-06 though.

Sniper, it's your action and I am glad you are doing something different. However, if the action was mine I would go with a 6.5-06 or 35 Whelen. Knock yourself out.

8x57mm
8x60mm
8x63mm or 8mm-06

Should be great with 200/220 grainers - modern 8mm!!!

I have sort of odd ball opinions on actions and chamberings. Since your action is a Winchester, I would choose an american cartridge.
You could save yourself some serious dough by getting your self a sporterized 8mm Mauser and reaming it out.
There sure are some really nice 8X57s with nicly done stocks , classy barrel bands and such, and you might be able to trade yout winchester forone and get enough cash in the deal to pay for the rechambering !
just a thought...tj3006

The 8-06 is amazing.
It will push a 200 grs bullet with SD above .275 at an honest 2800 fps, and is by so the most effective caliber to put on this case.
Bullet selection is more than good enough - how many bullets do we need?
The Accubond should do wonders!
