Does anyone have a hunting rifle chambered in 7.5 Swiss?

I know it is pretty much the same as a .308 but I really like the cartidge. I've talked to a CZ gunsmith and he said it would be $650 to convert a CZ550 and a couple of other gunsmiths said $200 or so to convert a Savage.

Anyone ever done this or am I the only crazy one out there who likes the Swiss?

I had a Blaser barrel in 7.5 Swiss for a few years, and it was a really OK round, but not OK enough for me to keep, I sold it recently to a fellow on this board, as a companion to his K31 rifle. It really is a good round, but the 308, and 30-06 are just as good, with many case, and ammo options.

I'd probably use one of my K31's but I have seriously thought about having a custom reamer made to match the chamber on my K31's. The fired case comes out looking like an Ackley Improved and I'm sure it has the capacity of at least an 06. I've got a couple mid- length Mausers that would be fun to do in various calibers off that case. The base is a little bigger than a 06 or Mauser round, but the bolt will handle that without problem.

I have a Steyr CISM target rifle built on the Steyr SBS action in caliber 7.5X55 Swiss which I shot over the course for a couple of years. The NRA was experimenting with allowing scoped rifles and the Steyr has a detachable magazine system which allows a reload in rapid fire with the scope mounted.

The cartridge is fully as accurate as a .308 Winchester and my scores were virtually the same as the ones I had been shooting with my Model 70 Winchester target rifle in that caliber.

This is how the manufacturer describes the rifle:

"A revolutionary bolt action design, the SBS represents the next generation of Steyr precision rifles, and should be a pace-setter for future bolt action rifles. The heart of the Steyr SBS is its action. Totally rigid, the high strength steel receiver houses its unique Safe Bolt. Boasting four locking lugs, the SBS bolt is stronger than necessary, and only a rotation of 60 degrees is needed for it to be unlocked. Grooves in the bolt body guarantee reliable function under adverse conditions, and the bolt field strips in seconds without tools.

Totally new, the SBS' receiver features a patented safety bushing that encases the extractor, thus providing an additional safety margin in case of unexpected excessive chamber pressures.

As a proof-test of this safety bushing, Steyr has fired special high pressure proof rounds of 120,000 pounds per square inch (PSI) in the SBS without any damage. For comparison, conventional high pressure proof loads produce only up to 70,000 PSI. Steyr's high quality cold hammer forged match grade barrel is screwed into the receiver.

The SBS' special smooth trigger is adjustable, of two-stage military type and comes set at just over 3 pounds (50 oz.) from the factory. Even with th safety in the FIRE position, no amount of slamming the butt on the floor will make the SBS fire. Drilled and tapped to accept the same scope bases as the Browning A-Bolt, the SBS is the first Steyr to accept American mounts."

If you know of anyone in the need of a target or tactical rifle with a lot of equipment, let me know. My target shooting days are over.

instead of looking for the 7.5 swiss you'll want to look for a 30x284 these reamers are available.
built on an 6x or 6.5x [or] 284 action [savage], or even on the k-98 would get you what you want.
i just modified a k-31 for hunting use [bubba'd it]

One thing to consider is the resale value of your modified rifle.

You can put a lot of money into cartridge conversions and have to sell the rifle at a loss.

While I think the 7.5 Swiss is an excellent cartridge, I am not going to convert any 308's to 7.5 Swiss. And I am not going to convert any of my K31's to 308 Win. It just does not make financial sense.

I have shot a 7.5 Swiss in a Blaser R 93.
I agree with Ron and the others that it is a good cartridge, equal to the 308 and the 30/06 for all practical purposes.
If you like the Swiss K 31 or their STG Military rifle the cartridge will serve you well.

But I see no reason for non Swiss person to chamber a new rifle in 7.5 Swiss, especially an American. Just get a 308 or a 30/06...

Thanks for all the replies. I know it doesn't make any sense I just like the cartridge. I already have a .308, .30-06, 7mm mauser, 6.5 swede and others I just like different chamberings.

I was talking to a couple local shooters who like to build different rifles usually wildcats but sometimes just hard to find older cartidges and one of them uses Savage 200 rifles as the starting point. For a bottom end rifle they turn out realy nice and they shoot amazingly well.

xausa that is one sweet rifle.

A person could not say anything disparaging about the 7.5 Swiss, it is a great round. But some projects are more practical as a good discussion, than actually doing. I do like the 30-284 idea posted above, but again, is it worth doing, just to duplicate a 30-06?

I used a 7.5x55 Swiss in a K31 for a military benchrest series of matches a few years back. I was very surprised at how easy finding a good load was, and I have never worked with a big .30 that consistently gave such low standard deviations in velocity. The K31 chamber differs from that of the 1911 version, being for all intents a .30/284. I have thought many times the 7.5x55 would be the best all round hunting 30 caliber.

Just do it! tu2

There are so many overlap cartridges already, so what's the diff? If you like it, and you know it'll work and you want something a bit different, then go for it. I like the idea.

Chaffee2,

I use my K31 for hunting - One of my favorite carry-around deer rifles!

But I'll reiterate the posts above - Much more practical to:
Get the 308 or the 30-06 for a hunting rifle or to
Get the the 308 or the 30-284 for a target rifle.

PS: but LOL - You don't have to be practical!

You guys are making me hurt all over for another K-31. They always feel to me like a piece of fine surgical equipment, especially when I pull the trigger. Wonderfully accurate rifles in the same class as a Sako M-39 or a Swede 96 with fresh bore.

@all

Well I'm using a modified K31 for hunting purpose. K31 Hunt as well as a simple R93 with the cartridge 7,5x55.

I'm using the copper bullet Gian-Marchet Gian-Marchet Guisan.

The accuracy of the cartridge is great. I have shot at 300 meters (approx. 330 yards) some group within less then 4 inches .

Good shooting and good hunting.

That is certainly true. I have had two 7.5 Swiss rifles and one .30-/.284 rifle, and used the same ammo in all three of them...most of it loaded with the same set of RCBS 7.5 Swiss dies.

The rifles were/are a M88 Win, an 1895 Martini schuetzen rifle made in Zurich, and a K-31. (Apparently the 1885 Martini was rechambered for the current 7.5 Swiss ammo sometime before I got it.)

I do shoot some factory ammo in all three, but in the M88, I have to single load the factory stuff as the ammo is too long for the magazine. I also use handloaded ammo put together with Winchester .284 cases in all three. My rifles don't seem to be able to tell them apart.

BTW, the M88 is the most accurate of the three. I have mentioned how accurate elsewhere, but won't here because no one would believe me anyway.

I have a Fox Ridge custom Encore rifle barrel in 7.5x55. I like this cartridge for the same reasons I like all my other odd-balls: Not everybody has one! Strangely enough, my rifle shoots the cheap Wolf Gold (Prvi) 174 gr SP load better than the Hornady loads. The one buck I've shot with it didn't know the difference.
