I bought a real nice rifle yesterday !
Its a 1955 Model 70 featherweight. Chamberd in my favorite cartridge , the 30,06.
It is in about 90% condition and the only thing that is not origional are the sling swivels. I think i got a great deal at 550.00. I have not fired it yet and probably will not till the 4 day weekend. I adjusted the trigger
and it feels prety good. I can't even start a dollar bill down the barrel channel. If I decide it needs to be free floated , I have a
worn featherweight stock on hand already from my custom .270. It has a pachmyer pad on it and I put a nice looking oil finish on it, so I could free float the barrel and even glass it if I want into that stock and save the Excelent one it came with. I put a 2.5 X 8 VX 3 on it.
Will be trying 150 grain speers with a charge of IMR 4064, and some 168 grain tripple shocks with RL-22...tj3006

kind of funny jim,
been loading 06 for a long time and 4350 was my favorite for the 1st 4 or 5 rifels i used. The other 06 I have just does'nt like it. If this one does not shoot well with the 4064 and the RL-22, 4350 will be my next atempt. If you have not tried RL-22 with heavy bullets you aught to give it a try. You will be amazed at the velocity you can get.
You will do as well with a 24,inch barrel as you would with a 300 RSAUM.
My othe 06 is a model 70 classic. If the new old one shoots well the classic will be turned into a .257 roberts or a 35 whelen...tj3006

I agree with your powder suggestions.

One other powder you might try is H 414. I've had excellent results with it in the '06.

Sounds like a sweet heart. Tried those old Win. barrels with Barnes, but not TSX. The fouling was worse than their normal reputation. Great bullet though, just be prepared. Like you said RL22, H4831, IMR 4831, great '06 powders with bullets on the heavy side. love the scope choice

Do try H 414. I've seen some flat amazing velocities from it in the 24" barrels, and accuracy was on par with the old favorites too. I am of the opinion that H414 is an outstanding powder with the lighter bullets in .30-06

different rifles sure do perform differently with the same powder...go figure. I'll try the RL 22. My M70 FW Classic in 6.5x55 sure likes RL 22 with 140 grain partitons. I'll see how it works in my '52 vintage M70 30'06.

H-414 is the best powder for a 30-06, and it's great in the .270 with 130gr bullets

I have used H-414 With good results with my 7X57 mauser and great results with my .257 Roberts. However my other 30,06 ,a model 70 classic does not like it. Belive me if i don't do great with one of the powders I have on hand H 414 will get a try. I did up a couple loads to try hopefully, this friday here is what i loaded.
150 gr speer flat base over 52 grs of IMR- 4064.
and 165 grain Hornady interlock boat tail over 49.5 grs IMR-4064.
i am gonna load some 180 grain bullets too
Sierras and balistic tips over RL-22 and IMR-4350...tj3006

Well, I tried RL 22 with 165 Ballistic Tips Wedneday. Good accuracy. Velocity was just over 2900 fps with 61 grains. I'll pick up some 414 and try that also.

Where did you find it at? I put one on layaway earlier this month at a pawnshop for 350 in about 90%. I can't wait to pick it up.

Well hunterbug I;ll tell you how i found it its a funny story too ! I had been at a gunshow here in Portland Or, and had raised a little money selling a couple scopes. I Found a decent pre 64 30,06 a guy had and I was concidering making an offer. Funny thing is I was wondering If it was a bad omen buying a rifle from a guy in a dress, I kid you not, the guy was dressed like a woman, i don't remember if he was wareing a dress but he was dressed like a woman.
Any way I started talking to a guy and told him I thought 550 was as much as I should spend cause the rifle had a kick pad making it not origional. The guy says I have an origional pre 64 06 I would sell for 550 except his was a featherweight. He said it was on consignment at a shop abou 25 miles out of town. I went there imeediatly called him on his sell and bought it from him a couple blocks from the shop.
The shop had another real cool rifle I liked a Remington classic 35 whelen and it was only 469.00 But I am a Model 70 and mauser guy so I picked the Featherweight...tj3006

Good job and enjoy. I think that I would have thought twice about buying from a guy in a dress too. Wink Mine even came with a Tasco Worldclass scope. clap Oh well, I got a great deal on the rifle I guess that I can't expect it to have a Zeiss too.
