Bought my son a Win 70 stainless rifle in 270 WSM for his birthday present as he was in need of a sheep rifle.
Only syn stocks I have bought over the last decade have been McMillans as I am a lefty. But at almost $600 for the Edge stock need to see what else is out there.
Need some feedback as to what is out there for the righty crowd as to good lightweight stock's because I would like to oder him one and have it here for a xmas present.

What about a Basner High Tech? I believe price is something like $250, but it needs paint and a recoil pad. Could make for a fun father/son project...

You can also have Basner install a pad and paint before it leave for additional costs.

H-S precision may be another one to look at. I would not buy a Bell & Carlson. I had a lot of issues with their junk.

I had the good fortune to drop my rifle off and pick it up at the McMillan shop about a year ago. I really liked the Sako Hunter/Tikka pattern. I think they made that pattern for me it fit so well. I ended up with an HTG due to the Sendero barrel profile on a Pac-Nor barrel though which has worked out well.

The Edge is a lot of money but, it is the best super lightweight stock I have seen. I guess it really depends on how important it is to save a few extra ounces. I'm looking for a similar rifle and will be going back to McMillan when/if I restock it.

My D'Arcy Echols Legend is currently with lee Christianson of Baldwin, WI. He is throwing together a pre 64 M70 action with a 24" Pacnor barrel in 9.3x62 for me. The stock weighed 22 oz, in Edge fill, before I shipped it to Lee.

+1 for the High Tech Specialties by Mark Bansner. I have one on a Ruger M77RS 35 Whelen that he fitted and finished w/paint and pad for around $315. Quality work for sure.

You can also look at MGA (Match Grade Arms) but a few years ago did not have the greatest reputation for quality workmanship. However, I have a full custom lightweight rifle from his shop and find nothing to complain about. How about a 26" bbl 375 H&H w/brake, 3x9 Nikon scope w/3 rds of ammo and be under 7lbs. He now offers an even lighter weight stock, shaving off another 3oz's.

lonewolf makes great light weight stocks. They are not cheap, but worth the price IMO.

High Tech Specialties by Mark Bansner

I've got two of them. One is the wife's 7x57. I built it with a blind box and it is around 7# with a scope. She has used it for 4 or 5 years. Trips to CO and Africa. I has held up fine.

I have one on my 280PDK. Don't seem to have a picture uploaded on it. It is a full MKX action and closer to 7.75#

If you don't mind doing some work I have a very light MPI built with a blind box. It does feel stronger than the High Tech but both have held up to my abuse.

As usual just my $.02

another vote for the Bansner High-Tech

at $250 its a good deal if you can do the pad, bedding and paint yourself.

If you're careful you can get it to finish around 24-25 ounces, which is what a McEdge will weigh in any pattern other than the Compact.

I actually prefer the Brown Precision, but they are another couple hours work over the Bansner, due to the raw fiberglass exterior rather than gel-coat.

The Bansner is a really nice stock. I have made some Brown Precision stocks over the years (starting in 1983 Eeker). Those are some work. The High Tech Specialties are very doable if you are handy at all.

As mentioned above, the McMillan Sako Hunter pattern is made for all the major brands of rifles. It is the most ergonomic pattern of the bunch. Good luck.

I recently spoke with McMillan and they were about four months out for delivery of the Edge stock. So if you choose an Edge, it probably wouldn't arrive by Christmas.

I know some have had bad experiences, but many have had great experiences with B&C. They make a new one for SC made M70's, its a Medallion with the Decelerator pad, alum bedding block and a textured finish. Its the same stocks on the M70 Extremem Weathers. Not sure of the exact weight but very light.

Just remember when you're looking at stocks, check to make sure they accept the short action MAG rifles, the well is a bit longer and its a bit wider too. Some stock makers specify that its for the M70 wsm's.

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

I have several different synthetics that are all good IMO.

Brown Precision High Country http://www.brownprecision.com/ I have a m70 win in one of these.

Kevin Rayhill builds some very nice stocks http://www.stockadegunstocks.com/ I have a custom single shot Savage 223AI in their Woodchuck

I am very partial to Boyd's JRS Classic Laminated. I know it isn't synthetic but I have never had any issues with them. http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/
